1853 June 15 Expect to begin to Lay by corn this day sometimes, Henry halling wood this morning working out Peas etc to day — Fannie Here

16th Finished weeding Corn this day & worked Peas etc etc Cotton & all done & began to work new ground Tobacco Laying by mountain field Corn

17. Laying by mountain field corn choping in new ground Tobacco Dry & Hot weather fannie & Jacob gone

18- Finished Lying by mountain field with Plows Choping out new ground Tobacco. no Rain last evening – fine rain at Mrs Hunts, Laying by Corn in Johns’s field,Henry is gone to Mill 8 Bus Corn Lila had a Girl child 16th June 1853 Fed sick Sallie claiborne & milly ann Ben has measles –– Jordan Sandy Lowry abram Fed Cate Jacob Sallie & Clem has had mumphs & Jerry & perhaps some others.

21st began to Cut wheat in Lot - choped over mountain field Corn & now following Plows Laying by - in Johns s field Sandy & Pallor has measles, going to finish shearing sheep mark etc this morning Jordan & Lowry also in house measles this evening & with Federick & Lila, 9 down in the house at this time & Kitty has mumphs tho out

22nd We are cutting wheat next to or= chard & lot to day Abraham Crews helping & still dry & hot, oat drying up very much & Tobacco plants in the Beds, what we have have planted missing very much 4 of our plant Beds look well last week tho they may have Dyed since at mountain 2 in new new ground look well one is gone

1853 Sept 3rd Rained all day Carrd yes= =terday In all before to this night 20 Logs to Yates Mill not Sawed nor Devrd

4 went to Wm Dews s to see him hepling he is

5. Sent to Mill 10 Bus Corn for meal worming & succoring Tobacco & Topingthis day

=6. & 7 Pulled fodder at mountain & at home

8th Rained Caught all my fodder on ground

9th still raining. yesterday we squared Barn Logs wormed & succored Tobacco all over but second yrs ground Peggy Sally Ben & all the chaps nearly got bad Colds Sally has been sick Raining & Mr Irby gone Mr Lipscomb at work on Buggy shaft but cant do much on a/c weather

1[ink spot] went to meeting Mr Plunket Elected Preacher Mr Lipscomb worked a little this morning pulling on Buggy shaft. —

12 Toping worming & succoring gathering Blade fodder squaring barn Logs etc -

15. yesterday worming & succoring Tobacco & stacking fodder very sorry & not one stack of good saved yet - this morning worming & succoring & Toping new ground Tob. Killed Lamb squaring Logs. good deal of fodder on ground. we have stacked 5 stacks Blades worming succoring & toping new ground Mr Lipscomb left at 12 Oclock

16. Stacked one stack fodder next to orchard Finished worming & succoring new ground to day Pulled some fodder & Cut some Tops finished Halling Barn Logs —

19 Tying up fodder worming & succoring & Toping Tobacco, Squaring Barn Logs

20. Raining this morning

1856 Augt 11 Finished the Lot nearly — -- 12th Augt began to Thrash wheat Ben with Kellys machine cloudy & like for Rain

13th Several Showers about this time Thrashing this morning & rained stoped us Bob & Joshua here from Mrs Hunts

14th we have been 2 whole days trying to Thrash Our wheat & it has rained so we have not finished yet. Toping & worming & succoring Tobacco this morning cloudy & Rained finely last night weather warm finished Thrashing wheat to day & card the machine to James P Lewis in evening

15 I am going to Riceville carry Jordan the Doct May see him,- Toping worming & & succoring over all our tobacco at this time, Sewed our Turnip Patch last week & some seed in Lot by Hog pen —

16th worming & succoring Tobacco Henry

18th I went to Court Monday morning & stayed till Tuesday night settled with D Marr & all McCullocks Legatees & had the acct Reported in full by Comm Banks as pr Rects & settled for Adams & Martha as here give up the Bond & took a Rect and if any Cost they have it to pay for advertising etc,- Borrowed $200 of Bro. Geo. Gilbert for a month — Our folks finished cutting pines at stony pint Grubed some Henry Lowry & claiborne Sawed shingle Timble & on Tuesday the 19th it Rained in the evening they got up apples & Beet Cider —

20 My wife gone to Mrs Hunts sent by her $119.21 to pay Danl R Hunt for Guano $10 for Lucy Ann collected for her Henry gone

Halled wood Cut & malled some in new ground Overseer & little Henry at work on Henrys House all day, fixing to Kill hogs in morning Jordan & Lowry come to help Francis Blanks came here between 7 & 8 Oclock wanted me to Hall his Oats down here in the road up to his House & I sent Henry & my 2 Grey Horse gone in the night

9 Given Out the negroes their Blankets Fed alse Sandy Jordan & Lowry & give Kitty one for her child at aspen grove, Give Little Henry & Jerry LilaSmith One here ^& Clem - had one Sent the Blankets to aspen Grove by Jordan, Killed Hogs here 12 in number weighing 1138 lbs here aspen G. 1777 sent Henry to Mill 5 Bus. wheat gothereoneCovercorn at mill1138 1 Turn wheat for 291.5 negroes Christmas bolled, fine morning, Sent 2½ Bushel wheat for Chumney Killed at aspen Grove & Brot here 22 Hogs1777 lbs Given overseer there 3½ Hogs weighing 300 Killed here this day 12 Hogs weighinglacking 4½ - whichI will send1738 Killed in all 3215 lb Still cold & cloudy Mr Blanks paid me One Dollar for last night & I gave ½ to Henry

10th Sent to Mrs Hunt for the nubbins She gave me & 2 Stirup Irons for waggon Halled wood Rails all day, little went after Chumneys Meal or flour overseer & & Smith at work on House laying floor etc etc Cutting & malling in new ground I went to meeting & aspen Grove this evening for benefit of negroes

11 I went to meeting to Strait Stone by in Buggymyself

12 Chumney gone to store Claiborne malling Little Henry & Smith cutting & stacking wood, Henry gone gone to mill with 1 Log for sheeting for stable & carrd 1 Bus. wheat for him & 1 Bus. for Ben & to bring back

1859 Decr 17th Mr Fox here yet - left about 10 or 11 Saturday self – & Horse worked on well in evening & Layed Hath in negroes House Piled shingles etc stoped Raining in evening

18th Stayed at home to day - -

19 went to Court. Chumney at work on well House & Jerry Smith Henry Halling wood claiborne & little Henry cutting & malling Rails & wood

20th Raining a little this morning working on Stable to day putting up rafters Sawing out doors facing of etc = I went down to Mrs Hunts with her Sent my horse to shop this evening by Charles,

21st worked on Stable, claiborne Jointing shingles little Henry & Smith Dawbing House in evening I went to Sale of Mrs Hunts Land, no Sale, at all, Mr Tompkins here on my return Fox came at night Mr T stayed all night

22. Mr T. left. Fox Finished well, Henry & claiborne with him till Dinner cleaning out & finished well HenryLittle Henry& chumbly at work on Stable claiborne & Henry & Smith went to new ground malling & cutting, Jerry went down to Plantation aspen Grove Kelley carried my hog home & got 3¼ VinegarGallons

23 working on Stable. Sent Henry to Mill Turn wheat for us 2½ & 2 Bus for chumny. brot back plank & bag Corn meal brot back — I have had sick head ache all day

24 Sent Henry to mill got Plank his own flour & Bens. worked on stable & negroe House & Rounding & Jointing Shingles I went down to warranting at Mr Millers about Irbys & Wm Yates Debts done nothing –
