January 21 - February 3, 1847
1847 Jany 21st began to strip in new ground barn this morning
22nd Striping Tobacco in same barn Yesterday & this morning fair & cold snow melted but little -
23 Cold yet & a little cloudy, we are striping Tobacco in new groundbarn tho very bad weather for striping
24 Sunday fair & snow melting very much
25 Cloudy & moderate weather, snow most gone Striping in new ground barn & expect to finish there to day - One Lamb yesterday Mrs Smith gave me four Dolls to pay Doct White her account with him
26 striping Tobacco to day & sent 10 Bushels corn to mill, & 1 Log to be sawed into Railing 2½ by 3. I wrote to Mr Dove sent 1 bag cotton 51 lbs to Pack
27 Striped Tobacco & put Hhd under prize & got it half full sent 1 Large 1 Common & 1 Calf Skin to Mr Lewis’s for Tanner the largest for sole next for upper next for Kip 3 in all Mr L to geta Receipt, weather quite cool to day & clear
28 began to mall in new ground Henry halling up Oats straw & leaves Lila & Ann shrubing fresh ground for corn 29 30 & 31 cloudy & part of the time striping Tobacco
Feby 1st burnt plant Bed on Mountain& sewed it
— 2. Cutting wood to burn above House Mr Benjamin Lain set in to work for me at 3/- per day
3rd Rained hard & the wind blew tremendous & in evening turned very cold & a hard night
February 4 - March 1, 1847
1847 Feby 4. Very cold & windy Fed malling Henry helping Mr Lain & halling wood the ballance cleaning out stables & raking leavesetc
5 weather moderating halling wood & sills etc for waggon House, malling etc
6th Malling Rails & cutting down corn Stalks this morning, Mr. Lain framing waggon shelter, weather fine & fair, -
13 this week burnt Plant Bed on Branch above House striped Tobacco one day malling Rails & Grubing on Johns Branch Lila compla[in]ing & I [bleeding|[bled]] her Mr Lain at work on waggon House & little house this week — Pleasant putting latches on Gates etc etc etc, no plowing downby us yet
17 Sent waggon to mill 10½ Bushels corn 1 Log to be sawed into Railing 2 by 3 In. for yard & also 2 Bags seed Cotton weighing 46 lbs 47 lbs 93 lbsbags in allmaking newthis dayground fence
18 Striping Tobacco, Raining Mr Lain at work in shop
19 striping Tobacco & prizing Lugs. nearly done. Lady Jane Lame by a hurt.
20 Sent to Mr Lewis's to Roll Logs 2 hands balance cutting in new ground & Piling wood,

March 6 - 18, 1847
1847 March 6th this week halled up some oats for seed & to feed Horses, cutting in new ground & malling, & this day Rolled Logs, Plowing for corn - weather good. only 4 Lambs alive at this time, -
March 8. breaking up Lot & burning log Heaps this day. Mr. Lain came again to work to day
9 Raining again & most tremendous wet every few days it Rains getting out seed Oats this morning Mr. Lain making carriage house doors Lala & Jane spining
10th Rained in morning about 10 oclock it faired off & a very pretty evening & we started to Lynchg with waggon & the worst time on man & beast that has been this winter viz. it began to Rain soon in the night wednesday night while we were at Locust thicket. Thursday morning dreadful, Raining Snowing & hailing & I slept in waggon the over night the rain etc put out our fire went to Campbell CH pestered some, there stayed all night all day night it snowed some, next morning started & got to Lynchg Friday about 12 oclock. Stayed all night sold our Lug Hhds Saturday morning 13th for $2.25. Started for home 10 or 11 oclock & got home Sunday evening Horses very much worsted, it snowed also friday night — balance burning log Heaps

March 18 - April 2, 1847
18th began to sew Oats in evening this day, sewed Plant Beds over —
19 Sewing Oats and cleaning up new ground, Mr. Lain Riving boards to cover waggon House, fine weather at last
20 covered waggon House sewing oats & planted Irish potatoes & covered them with leaves, 8 loads put on the patch,
21 Raining this morning & cool -
22nd Clear Plowing for corn, treading Oats & malling wood in new ground
23 Halling up Logs to 12 oclock out of newground Then sewing Oats
24 Sewing oats Halling wood out of new ground
25. Sewing Oats & Halling out wood
26 This morning Raining Thrashing Oats & Fed went to mill Halled manure & shoemakingin garden in evening turned quite cold
27 This morning fair & cold we are Halling woodwaggon & cart,& cleaning up new ground Tremendous windy day —
28 moderate day — went to Mrs Coleman
29 Sewing Oats Fed Halling manure to Plant Bed on mountain etc Burnt little Plant Bed in & sewed inGarden

31 Rained last night Plowing for corn Then sewing oats. Coltering in new ground quite windy Aprl 1st Sewing Oats.
2 Aprl. Sewing oats & collering in new ground This day began to Hill in new ground weather moderate & clear Sewed about 40 Bus. Oats —

1847 Feby 1st Memorandum of an agreement made & entered between J. W. Graves & Benj. F. Lain both of Pittsya County Va Wheras the said Lain has agreed to do Carpentry work for said Graves, and the said Graves agrees to pay the said Lain 3/- pr. day for every day the said Lain shall work. Given under hands this the date & year above written
