My precious Nannie--

I must stop before I read another line of Chaucer to tell you how ecstatic I was a few minutes ago when I found the package at the post office. I really believe you possess some occult fairy godmother power; for I had been contemplating suggesting that what I most wanted for my birthday was a pair of bath slippers as I went barefoot to the cold bath every morning and lo! and behold! Before I had written it to you, came your letter telling that my wish was already in process of fulfillment, and to-day the slippers are here. Thank you so much my dear est Nannie. It was so thoughtful of you to send my birthday present before time just when I wanted it so much. Have just written to Mrs. Myrick telling her I had given up going to the Thanksgiving game & Theodora & I had planned to spend the recess her with Theodora. She wanted us to set up a party for her to chaperone to the game, & Theodora & me to spend the holiday with them; but Lolie had set her heart on coming down here, & had already written Charles to send us a couple of boiled chickens. So we declined. I thought I better not afford the game. Theodora spent Sunday afternoon with me & she looked so well & pretty in her new black serge tailor made gown that is such a beauty, fits her so well and so becoming. It is not a jacket but buttons up nearly to the throat with little lapells & dickies & black shirt colar. [Sketch of a dress from neck to knee, including buttons, collar, waist, and puffed sleeves.] You may get some idea from this very one sided sketch. Prof Hudsen is interesting now in Rossetti & tomorrow he read the Blessed Damozel--do you remember when you read it to me? Anderson is giving us a Comedy of Errors now. Everyone is very excited over the big game, but our chances of winning are small as all the dear old fellows on the team last year are lost. Must study.

Bye-bye with heaps of love & thanks.
