1855 april 27th not quite done Halling out manure putting ashes Plaster etc on Plant Beds etc Jordan gone to mill this morning after meal coltering & Hilling at stony point

2nd May 1855 We have been hilling second yrs Land at stony pint Coltering at Johns branch & laying off Prized Two Hoghd Lugs nearly done, all the Lugs - manured Plant Beds except on Mountain,= expect to finish at Stony pint to day –

4 Fine Rain, Sold T W anderson my Crop Tobacco made 1854 for $8½ Round; 2 Hdds Lugs prized & delrd, the weights we are to be governed by in Richd, – Hilling on Johns Branch, Card 2 Hhd Lugs to Riceville yesterday Fed sho[e] mending for Mary Hunt, taking down all our Second quality Tobacco this morning, Beding for Cotton etc etc

5 Bedding & Planting Cotton Irish Potatoe Patch by spring, Peas water mellons Pump kin Patch Cucumbers musmelons cucumber etc Hilling on Johns branch Beding on Branch for Tobacco quite Cool this night, uncovered our Plant Beds, etc ¬– Planted 2 squares Greens etc etc Halled up last stack Oats –

12- Finished Hilling on Friday & Began to Plow & weeding Corn done weeding & Plowing all the flat Land went to Lynchg past week Mr Fitzgerald done to Richmd to see a Doctor on a/c of his situation

14 Plowing & weeding corn & replanting as as we go, very dry weather Corn & every thing comes up badly –

1855 June 2 Planting Tobacco to day new& small ps fresh ground at stony point Mr Crews & abram Planting fine Rain & season as ever I saw Just Plowed & worked out branch Second time before it Rained, fine weather now

4th Planted Johns’s Branch Tobacco to day & pr of ps next to orchard & pr of Jacobs Beding Lot in evening of this day Sewed Peas on branch Just before Rain Planted Collard Plants & finished this day Nannie gone to Mrs Hunts, – got 2 Bags of meal last week & 2 more at Yates mill worked over Cotton etc etc last week

June 6th Beded up & Hilled Lot, Thining Corn the 7th Henry yesterday Card my last Toba to Mr Anderson as we came back took in a Hhd for Capt Fitzgerald & Henry has started for Lynchg this morning – Finne growing weather & every thing has improved very much in deed ¬

9. Finished Planting Tobacco yesterday Planted all day long in evening negroes Planted Mrs John S Lewis very like to die at this time,- fair this morning & Cool

13th Mrs Lewis Died the 11th June & buried 12th 1855 weeding down Tobacco Harrowing Corn Sent Jordan with 2 Bags Corn to mill 4 Bus. & to get 10 Bushels at mill

22 Cut wheat Straw yesterday all day where the chinch bug injured the wheat; Fed & little Henry working Cotton Hilling Sweet Potatoes weeding down, Tobacco began 20th to Lay by Corn & sewed Peas & Guano In fresh ground above House.

1855 May 1st I have this day Sold my Crop of Tobacco 2 Hhds Lugs prized made 1854 except a little parcel Sold Separately at the Factory to Thomas W. Anderson for 8½$ all round except the little parcel the Two Lugs Hhds prized I have delrd & am to have the weights when sold by Mr Anderson in Richd in a few days Delired the 2 Lugs Hhds weighing by 3rd May 185[5] 1 Hhd weighing 1055 lbs 1 Do - Do 2050 lbs @$8½ $174.25 the little parcel upwards of 30 lbs got $1.52 which is pd

also pd me For Henrys & Jordans parcels $2.08 for Henry 2.28 for Jordan

1855may 7 Delrd to T. W. Anderson 1368 lbs Tobacco pRecd @$8½ 116.28 29th Delrd to Do Do 1348 lbs " pRecd @ 8½ 114.58 June 6th delrd last to Do 1061 " " $405.11 this day @$8½ 90.18 Bond On Demd this 6th June $495.29 === 1855 for - 495.29

Memorandum wheat used of Crop made 1855 2 Bushels for ourselves Settled & tolle paid 2 Bushels let Mr Evans have Sent 4½ Bu

1856 april 22nd Sent to Mill yesterday & got 3 Turns meal & sent 2 Turns to mill, Raining this morning Shelling Corn, working on baskets etc etc

23 Striping Tobacco — Rained in evening

24 Halled Tobacco from mountain & striped all day - F. W. came here ––

25 Hilling in new ground & halling wood Cut & spayed 13 15 markedaltered shoats clear this morning Doct Thompson came again I went to Riceville Lowry taken sick, clem better Fanny Pall sick & Jerry Smith Bedding Cotton ground & Potatoes Planted Irish & Sweet got 1 Bushel from Mr Anderson of the Nansemond

26. Planting Potatoes & Corn at stony point etc Hester folded a mule Colt this day about night Just went 1 year to a day quite Cool this morning — —

27 Doct Thompson here making 8 in all or times

28th Coltering & Hilling in new ground, Henry & Sandy Plowing at stony point - cloudy & like for Rain clem & Pal getting Better Lowry Fannie & Jere Smith still complaining

29th Plowing & Harrowing & Bedding on Branch for Corn. Jordan Coltering in new ground Balance Hilling in new ground – fine weather I think the negroes that were sick is mending Manured Plant Beds about this time,-

30 Finished Planting Corn on Branch this morning Planted Snaps & Pumpkins Finished yesterday Coltering new Hilling at new ground fine clear day Jordan Henry Sandy & Buck Halling out [water stain] in Lot back of Garden

May 1st Striping Tobacco Raing this day - 2 Carried 1 Land Lugs & short Tobacco to Riceville

1856 June 1st My Bro Jonathan left here yesterday will stay in Riceville a day or 2 & then he is going to Orange

2nd Sent Henry to mill this morning 6 Bus corn & brot back 6 Bushels sent Mr Hancock 3½ Gallons vinegar Sent for my Lime & Plaster brot from Lynchg by Mr Yates dry weather at this time no Tobacco planted yet of consequence Cutting of Tobacco Hills at stony pint this morning & replanting Corn, & then weeding Corn in Johns field, trying to get done

3rd Card all the Tobacco to andersons we have striped,- weeding corn

4th Jordan Sandy Lowry Buck & Johnson all sick clem waiting on them -

4th Rained a little this evening we set out one square collard plants, weeding & Plowing Corn. & Lila Harrowing Cotton this June

5th Fair & clear this morning — working in corn to day I am going to Mr Hunts for Mrs Clements

6th Rained a fine rain last night planting Tobacco Sandy very sick sent for the Doct. etc etc

6th Fine Rain last night we planted Tobacco at Stony pint new ground. & part of fresh ground next to Crews — still cloudy & fine season

7th Finishing fresh ground next to Crews this morning Plenty of Plants to Plant every Hill we shallhave not done weeding corn yet began to Bed Lot this evening, Jordan Sandy Lowry & Buck sick and Johnson, too the Doct has been 3 times to see Sandy & between 15 & 20 timesin all

8th Fine day & not much Rain

9th Plowing Beding Lot Hilling & Planting Rained in the evening, shelling corn
