1858 July 2nd Cutting Oats at Stoney pint to day = Halled up Load or stack Fodder This morning – Fodder prime

3rd Cutting Oats this day finished at stoneypint Cutting up at Chumbleys, fine growing weather

4th Went to Sunday School - good

5th Cutting Oats at mountain this morning Fine weather; a little cooler Mr Lain came this morning to set up Hhds to prize Tobacco

6th Rose had a Mule Colt Last night which we call Tom,- Finished Weeding freshTobacco ground Tobacco at Chumblys, Mr Lain here yet & has Set up 4 Hhds Plowing & Laying by Corn next to orchard Fine weather ———

7th July Sent to Mill this morning 3 Turns 6 Bushels corn for ourselves, 3 Bushels corn for overseer & 2½ Bushels wheat for him; Plowing Tobacco at mountain Hilling up Tobacco at Johns’s Branch,- to day Mr Lain finished yesterday & gone paid him for his work Turned quite cool day before yester= =day 5th Inst,- Turned warm – again

8th Hilling up Fresh ground Tobacco at mountain Laying by corn next to orchard, Smart shower of Rain this evening.

9th Hilling up Fresh ground Tobacco at mountain Laying by corn Plowing Rose till 12 Oclock Cloudy & warm this morning - not done choping Cotton Yet – – – Weighed Out for negroes to Eat this day 108½ lb Bacon, to see how long it will last will begin on it to morrow being the 10th day of July 1858 -. Plowed Rose to day her Colt improves very much fine weather expect to Finish Hilling fresh ground Tobacco at mountain this evening

Augt 1st Sunday — Hot weather I am sick

2nd Finished working Tobacco, sewed Turnips in Tobacco Lot last week —

3rd Choping in Corn & getting up apples

4 Beeting apples, & halled from stoney p[o]int this Sent Buck to Mill 4 Bags 2 Bus in each 1 overseermorning choping in corn, overseer Henry & Jordan gone up to Cedar Hill to Dig Cider trough, clear Hot weather, Turned Horses in Stoney pint

5 worked on Road to day balance choping in corn, Beet Cider in evening Fair Hot & Dry weather every thing wants Rain, Corn begins to Fade — agreed with Coalsman Chumbly for another year to live at Cedar Hill & work in plantation or out, am to give him $140 to be paid when crop sold 1860 Find him 300 lb Pork & 4 Bushels Corn & 1 Bbl wheat & same agreement for 1859 as 1858 as pr agreement signed 6 augt 1858.

6th Halled up Shock Oats from mountain Beeting cider this morning & then Toping worming & succoring Tobacco

7th Toped over Tobacco wormed & succored over We had a fine shower Rain last night Taking some of our bus to night

8th Went to meeting to day

9th Choping in corn worming & succoring over Tobacco Cutting out place for overseers house Sent Henry up to Cedar Hill to restack Oats to Keeping them from spoiling & to finish Cider Trough, etc

10th went to meeting some of our folks went

12th Mr Chumbly & Henry has been at work on Thilling Room by Corn House balance worming succoring over Tobacco fair & Dry Mr Crews buried yesterday died day before,–

1858 Sept 7th Went up to Jacobs to day pulling Fodder & Stacking to day — — Tobacco very sorry – pulling all day at home, sent to mill etc,- warm weather at this time

8th Pulling fodder here & at Cedar Hill Nannie gone to Mrs Hunts, & finished at home

9th Tying up fodder at home & worming ^ Tobacco& stacking some fodder got up 7 or 8 stacks & about stack to several more, put up 3 at Cedar Hill & got some to stack to day – trying to get done pulling up there by 12 Oclock to day fair fine weather for the business,- Bot Jacob Black Horse Bill last night. gave him $50. payable next march - & brot him home ¬

10th I went to Cedar Hill Finished pulling fodder there & put up 2 more stacks Jordan there this evening helping about fodder ¬ Stacking here & worming & succoring Tobacco put up 21 stacks here & 5 at Cedar Hill, Turned out cattle in Pasture at Stoney,- like for Rain this morning-

11th Went to meeting at Strait Stone Rained a pretty shower, worming & succoring Tobacco at mountain, Jordan went to Cedar Hill yesterday to help about fodder got some in the rain,- done stacking at home & put up 21 stacks one or Two small ones,

12th Mr. M. Pannills Funeral to day at S Stone quite Cool, Sent Jim up to Jacobs this morning

13th quite cool worming & succoring Tobacco

14. 15. 16 & 17 & 18th worming & succored over Tobacco Cutting Tops & began 17th to Cut Tobacco about House, & Cutting to day 18th at Cedar Hill I have been stilling this week ma[de] 26 Gallons Brandy & left there 8 Gallons for

1858 Oct. 26th finished sewing wheat in Lot at Cedar Hill this day & went to Plowing at fresh ground shingling House Mr Wyatt & Henry - Mr Chumbley at aspen Grove & Jordan halling wood at work on corn shelling Room at Corn House finished sewing wheat in fresh ground at Cedar Hill

27th Finished sewing fresh ground at Cedar Hill shingling House Mr Chumbley at work at Plantation on Carriage house & covering negroes house Finishing shingling one side of house Jordan Halled wood at home & Halled wood for Mr Neale-

28. Chumbley & Jordan at home balance up at Cedar Hill sewing wheat & covering House finishing corn shelling Room – – – – – cloudy & like for Rain, Rained a little last night - put my hogs at Stoney pint at this time - Rained a little off & on nearly allday Just began to Shingle front side of House at Cedar Hill, Mr Wyatt left yesterday evening. We finished plowed up Land for wheat but did not Sew it. we shelled Corn & fix stable in evening -

29th Began to Strip ^^Tobacco in new prize Barn to day all Come home from Cedar Hill, to day & last evening - still Raining

30th Went to appraise Mrs Stone Estate, Mr Chumbly Jordan & Lowry halled up Logs for overseers house at Cedar Hill gathered Succors here Skimed stable Logs etc gathered Cotton

31st Stayed at home all day little sick

Novr 1st Digging Sweet Potatoes this day & yams Sent Henry & jerry Smith to Cedar Hill Shingling House Sent to Buck to Mill5 Bags 9 Bushels Corn for meal - clear this morning
