519 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE. Aug 6/84 Be it remembered that on this the 6th day of August 1884 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in it's Council Chamber pursuant to the call of His Honor the Mayor John Leary. The Following Officers are present, Towit; His Honor the Mayor John Leary and Councilmen Chas F. Clancy, B.F. Day, Geo. F. Faye, W.A. Harrington, Franklin Matthias, B.L. Northrup, Alfred Snyder, E.F. Sox, and H.L. Yesler. Thereupon the following proceedings are had: And now His Honor the Mayor submits a message on the general condition of City finances, Together with suggestions for future legislation. Ordered filed. And now the Council proceeds to elect the City Officers for the ensuing year with the following result, To wit: Clerk: E.S. Osborne Harbor Master: D.H. Webster Health Officer: Dr. G.A. Weed Justice of the Peace for the City: S.B. Vrooman Policemen: E.A. Gardner, T.J. Small D. H. Webster, Wm Murphy Thomas Ross, Wm H. Pinckney James Welch, F.L. Bangs Street Commissioner: G.L. Manning Surveyor: R.H. Thomson Treasurer: J.D. Lowman And now His Honor the Mayor makes his appointments for the Committees as follows, To wit: Judiciary and Legislative{ B.L. Aug 6/84 of Compiled Ordinances be accepted & Contract so awarded Ordered that the Council stand now adjourned Attest: E S Osborne, Clerk Approved: John Leary, Mayor Aug 21/84 Be it remembered that on this the 21st day of August, 1884 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in it's Council Chamber pursuant to the call of His Honor the Mayor John Leary. The following Officers are present To wit: His Honor the Mayor John Leary and Councilmen Chas F. Clancy, B.F. Day, Geo. F. Frye, W.A. Harrington, Franklin Matthias, B.L. Northrup, Alfred Snyder, E.F. Sox and H.L. Yesler. thereupon the following proceedings are had; Petitions Rec'd From L.F. Dearborn et al for grading Jackson Street from Commercial to 2d Street. Referred to Street Comtee From Wm Harkins for an allowance of $1088.00 on a/c of 4th Street Grade. Referred to Street Comtee From Fred Gasch et al for a Sewer in Union Street betweeen 8th and Elliott Bay. Referred to the Comtee on Sewers From H. Muller et al for removal of Chinese habitations from Clay Street between Water & West Streets. Referred to a Special Comtee To wit: Sox & Day. From David Ross et al for reducing license on book peddlers. Referred to Judiciary Comtee From Louis Steen for the right to build an addition to Butcher shop on Front Street. Referred to the Comtee on Fire & Water supply. From Jane Barry for the right to erect a Wooden Building on Front Street to take the place of "Aa" Saloon site. Referred to Comtee on Fire & Water supply. From John E. Hale for cancelling tax deed to Lots 1 & 2, Block 6 of McNaughts 1st add. Dec 12/84 Ordered that said claims be & they are hereby referred to Street Comtee

Ordinances The Attorney submits an Ordinance entitled "An Ordinance to Authorize the execution of a Contract to furnish Gas for Lighting the public streets" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote Towit: In favor of adoption Frye, Harrington, Latimer, Northup, Rinehart, Snyder, & Yesler. Against adoption: None An Ordinance is submitted entitiled "A special Ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills" Adopted upon the following vote, Towit: In favor of adoption Frye, Harrington, Latimer, Northup, Rinehart, Snyder, & Yesler. Against adoption: None

Miscellaneous The Chief of the Fire department submits proposals to furnish beds etc for use of Fire Department. Referred to Fire Com tee Ordered that hereafter the pay of the Street Commissioner be paid out of the City Fund. Ordered that the Chief of Police be & is hereby instructed to transfer one of the Day Policemen to the Night force
