1860 April 7. Hilling in new ground below oats Stacks,- clear pretty weather – I went to meeting to day

8th & 9 went went to meeting

10 Cloudy this morning —, Henry laying of[f] Fresh ground 1 way Harry Harrowing Beds for Corn, Hilling in new ground Planted Swet Potaote Patch ¬– I went down with Mrs Hunt to her place

11. Coltering & Hilling in new ground etc

12th Halling out manure put some in corn field Raked some I went to Milton wednesday & got back, Thursday ¬– fine weather —

13th. Began to Plant Corn this morning Finished planting corn in fresh ground & began in upper part of Lot in evening I went to Plantation this evening — The Two Sows at aspen Grove had only 2 pigs¬– our here is doing well Brought up young cow & calf from there this week & sent Slow & her Calf down there

14 I went to Chalk Level to attend to warrants vs Adams & Davis got Judgt vs Davis & had the Cost to pay & 1.26 I think in adams case for Mr Hunt.

15 went to meeting to Edgehill -

16 went to Court, Likely for Rain but did not Hilling Halling wood & coltering Sent Robin to Yates & got him shod ¬–

17. Bedding up Branch Land for corn Halling out Dirt from well fighting fire at Kelleys & McHaneys I Did not come home till to night windy nearly every day

18 Raining this morning, Cutting up may weeds in wheat shelling corn in morning.

1860 Sept 1st I Returned from Lynchg & Hollins Institute & left Sallie at School wy went there & returned wednesday night & come home thursday Beet some applies etc

2nd Henry at work on yard & shiller balance cutting. Mrs Hunt started for Mr Browns this morning — I went to aspen Grove settled with Cothran, lost one Hog there

3rd went to New Bethel to meeting been going nearly 2 weeks Jacob & Mr Moses with a great many others professed

3rd Rained this morning making Brooms & Picking wool etc began to over Tobacco

4th Toping & worming succoring Tobacco cloudy, Sent Henry over to old Place to borrow their Fan to Fann out our wheat

5. Finished Toping & worming & succoring Tobacco I sent for the Fan at old place to day I went to see Mr Grastys creditors & aspen Grove to day & Collected only of one man McHaney Hubbards & Dawson etc etc

6 Finished pulling fresh ground fodder worming Tobacco Brot home still etc Halled Rocks to set it up, suned second rate Tobacco got down some to prize Faned out some wheat this morning & sent ½ Bbl new crop here to mill

7th Sent 2½ more & after that sent yesterday Prizing Tobacco to day.

8th Prizing Tobacco in morning Tying up Blade fodder & Pulled some in far field to day shacked up all pulled down we went to S S Meeting to day — Sent Doct Jenning C. Thompson for Bens child Betsy to day 1st time - 9th to see Betsy again to day — Mrs Hunt come back from Mr Browns Saturday & staid till Tuesday

1861 West & Mr Panill about money coming to J D Hunts Est. & Wm Smiths Est under Deeds of Trust from James B Faris property sold 31st March 1860 & Due in Six months. say 31st Augt 1860 & Geo West is to pay me for the above Estates awarding to Statement, Rained this evening, Mrs Hargrave came here this evening, great excitement & men are starting to Richmond to War with the North. Many are gone, many are going, Halled up stack fodder this evening & last in far field ¬next to Whiteheads Coltering Hilling & planting Corn finishing all at home to day ¬– fine weather Sent to Mill for Chumney & 1 Turn Corn for Ourselves this day – ours at mill yet

25 Hilling in new ground & Coltering Henry Harrowing Corn Land here by cow Pen & finished planting at home Planted snaps etc Put Guano on our Plant Beds

26 Halling out manure this morning & coltering with steers in evening & hilling, Henry halling rails down on creek to day –¬ etc I went to aspen Grove to day they wont get done planting corn this week –¬ they are hilling there they have 30 Lambs to this time

27 Halling out manure & Rails on creek next to McHaneys coltering in new ground till 10 Oclock Hilling in new ground, I went to Riceville Settled with Doct Thompson for Est & nearly paid my account too,- 28 Raining this morning

28th Showery this morning, put my old Sow in pen

29 Finished Coltering & laying off new ground Beding up Creek Land for Corn, Hilling halling out manure & nearly done, overseer [faded] digging holes for Post at Carriage House did not finish there

1861 april 30th Put up foundation of Carriage House Bob & overseer finished halling out manure Henry & Harry Bedding Corn Land on branch clem Hilling cool weather at this time & dry

May 1st Marked Calves Beding for Corn on branch Fencing next to Vaughans McHaneys & on Road & clem Hilling — cool morning began to fence this morning on Creek & they wont finish neither will they finish fixing ground for Corn, – windy & cool to day

2nd Mr Blanks came this morning & went to aspen Grove to Spay Shoats 26 in all then Came here 9 here to alter & mark 1 he said was too small to spay marked it & Turn it out to be done here after went from here to Mr Hunts place for the same purpose, overseer went to Mill to day with waggon carried 8 Bushels wheat for me & 1 Turn Corn to Richard Whitehead|Whiteheads]] 1½ Bushel wheat for Henry & 5 Bushels wheat for himself Carried the wheat to Faris Mill for flour, last night Patrolling our company – Our poeple are fencing on Creek to day & finished etc etc clem spining etc very cool windy weather & yesterday & day before tremendous winds etc dry & cold Marked 3 Calves here and at aspen Grove, 3rd May Began to Plant Corn on Creek this morning, & finished or trying to finished bed=ding & listing. Cow, Clarys younger Heifer Clary had a calf yesterday –brot Two 2 Turns meal yesterday home –

4th Finishing Planting Corn on Low grounds Plowing in fresh ground - Sent to mill for Henry Hester & Esau for Jerry to day I went to Chalk Level to day– [faded] meeting at Hunts place FW & Mary James here

1866 Aspen Grove Feby 7th Henry &claiborne, his son […] Bees this morning hot here before 9 […] Safe, little Henry Halling wood. balance […] in new ground, cloudy & cold like for snow Billy getting Garden Post this morning & Just set in to work. very cold

8th. I went to Cedar Hill to day, & went to Rolands - our folks finished new ground fence & then Halled Leaves little Henry Plowing - Double Plow Billy Hewed Garden Post & making Door to Bee House this evening - did not finished it

9. Halled Leaves again this day Henry plowing Halled up Garden Post & forks for Horse rack Billy fixed Bee House door, made Bench Horse & put up Horse Rack, Beautiful weather Pride Hunt started to new London to school Jerry carried him, over there, fine weather

10th Halled Rails out of new ground & finished new ground fence, etc Henry Plowing & broke his Plow I went to Strait Stone meeting fine weather

11th Kate & Mr Moses Came here last night we went to meeting to day fine moderate weather my young sow that has been sick so long had 4 Pigs last night & I did not know she was in that way at all, - we drove the mules to Car. =riage to day to Strait stone, they pulled fine

12th. Rained some, Rolled Logs to day in new ground & ps in fresh ground, above Neals old Barn put up 15 or 20 small heaps only 4 small heaps in new ground Jerry help us with 2 hands send some Pea Hulls down for Sheep & got 2 waggon wheels from Big McHaney waggon to Hall wood - etc

13th. claiborne Henry & Ben shrubing in fresh field Little Plowing in Lot back of old prize Barn I went up to Cedar Hill got some Peach sci[?] home set them back of smoke house done up back of our chimney - I found Jacob P Graves
