1857 Feby 8th Rained this evening & turned off Cool & windy & at night looks a little like snow again, some high banks left.Snow nearly gone

9th Monday This Morning clear & cool quite a fine morning Halling wood & straw Malling in new ground & burning Brush Kitty & little Cutting all Logs etc etc Ground Cobbs & Corn this evening

10. Cutting old Logs Burning Brush malling made fire under Planks etc, Ground Hominey for Mrs Neal Lent Mr Crews horse to go to Mill, Fine weather this morning – Cool & windy Dr White here & I settled with him for Mr Neal & took in Bond & Saved Mr Neal of the $30 to pay it off $8.92 - -etc not compounding

11th Cutting old Logs in new ground Malling Pilling Brush Nannie & Jerry gone to Fannies Sewed Balance Plant Bed at new ground Burnt Soon after Christmas, - fine weather Henry firing Plank, he is complaining,

12th Pretty morning Sandy malling Henry sick. Jordan alse & Kitty halling leaves this morning Federick claiborne & all the others except Sandy fixing plant Bed on Road next to Mr Lewis s after awhile in morning - want to sew it to day & fence it in with Guano, Jerry card cutting house key away to Fannies,- etc — Sewed Plant Bed & trenched it, Guanoed want to fence & cover it in tomorrow. Sewed Cabbage seed & lettuce & mustard

13. Fencing & covering Plant Bed this morning Henry firing Plant. cloudy & like for Rain

1857 13th February Sent Henry to Mr Tuckers for Plow P[o]ints skillet & spice mortar this morning Only got 2 p[o]ints spice mortar & skillet.

14th February Halling wood Malling, alse & Kitty cleaning Out my stable, moderate weath =er. Halling leaves this evening firing Plank about this time. meeting & Election at Strait Stone for Preacher to day Postponed & & Bro Mason continues, like for Rain

15th Fine Pleasant weather for the time of year all went to meeting to day Sold Bro Mason my Buggy sometime ago he got it away this meeting

16th Striped Tobacco all day & finished in old prize Barn, Raining all day

17th Striping Tobacco in new prize barn to day. put Hhd under prize.

18. Malling prizing Tobacco, lugs fine weather. Mr Nowlin came at night last Fannie here going to Mill to day Raking around barn, lent Mr Crews a Horse to Mill being Twice Salley went Home with Fannie 19th to go to school @ $3. pr month Board & we are this day being the 19th malling Pilling Brush Hewing Sills of Barn. Halled up Stack fodder the 1st of this week from Johns Spring Largestack Sent 4½ Bushels Corn to mill & got 2 Turns meal At Jany Court allmost impossible to travel the Roads for the mountains of snow & before the 17th Feby all the snow nearly gone Delightfull weather at this time warm & moderate Since monday then it Rained hard [water stain]trees & moved Rose bushes [water stain]

1857 Feby 20th Malling Pilling Brush. Henry & claiborne Halling up Timbers for Corn House & Porch to Our House. like for Rain, Have not heard a word from Jacob since about the 15th of Jany he left Richmond for his Grand Papas went to Strait Stone to day & nobody met about new county but Mr Tucker, paid Mr Yates $10 on acct of my shop acct 1856 pr Rect Henry began to Plow this day laying off at Stony pint, Did not Rain much

21st We are malling - Halling wood Pilling woods Brush, Henry Plowing for corn little Henry Shrubing around apple trees at stony point. fine mornings — Halling out straw

22nd Mrs Hunt & Lucy Ann came here Saturday beautifull day clear moderate weather

23rd fine day Fixing Plant Bed at head of Slash next to Mr Neals & going to sew it to dayFixing Potatoe Patch & about Planting Irish Potatoes done it cutting wood etc to Burn Plant Bed above House, on Branch Mr Wyatt came here to work this morning — Henry Plowing for Corn, Bedding

24th My wife & Jerry gone to Mrs Hunts & expects to go to Hargrave & Colemans Store & Come back in morning Did not go come back at night Burning Plant Bed above House next to Crews to day expect to sew to night part of it not burnt but Guanoed upper part. like for Rain Warm weather for the season — Henry Plowing Hester & Pompy for Corn & this evening Pompy by himself

25. Lent Mr Neal a Horse to go to Mill Henry & Claiborne Plowing finishing Plant Bed this morning, Halling Straw covering

1857 March 4th All Hands malling Pilling wood Buck Halling to House, Henry & Claiborne will go to Plowing in Lot at 12 Oclock weather a little moderated this morning

5th All hands gone to malling Plowing etc But it set in to Raining & we are going to strip Tobacco in new prize Barn Jerry started yesterday morning wednesday to go with Henry Clay to go with Mrs Clement to CH Lowry Ran away & come down here first of this week I sent Jerry with him back & I hear that Malissa is cutting [swills?] etc etc etc got a Letter form Jacob P. the 1st of this month, answered it forthwith & wrote to Cousin Cleo too to council him at Capt Boxleys

6th Burning Brush malling Prizing Tobacco Shelling corn & then Plowing up Lot for Tobacco. Turned off cool & clear Mr Crews help me striped Tobacco yesterday went to see Cap Fitzgerald to day & settled with him for Fannie W Fitzgerald as Gudn & Exer & took in her bonds for Hire & Rent 1856 —

7th Very cold & windy this morning Sent Jordan to Mill 1 Barrel corn for meal first of the new crop we have sent to mill 2 Turns at mill to bring is old corn, Sent Handcock 3 Gallons Vinigar malling in new ground Plowing Kate & Sallie came down here this evening

8th Nannie Kate & Jere went to meeting to Riceville very cool cloudy day -

9th Plowing malling & cleaning out fence Row around new ground expect Halling up Oats fodder & chaff this evening Cool & cloudy & like for falling weather Lent Andrew Crews a horse to go to mill to day

1857 April 3rd Carrying Manure in Garden this morning Breaking Colts to work bushing Oats, Raking leaves at new ground claiborne & little Henry Plowing for corn very cool & dry & I think all the fruit Killed with cold, about this time Colts Rose worked tolerable Netty done very badly. Kicked & Jumped very much, she would not work with Pompy at all, but we made work some by herself, Halling out leaves on corn field from new ground in evening -

4th Putting manure on Plant Beds this morning Plowing for Corn, Raking leaves, weather yet cloudy - 3 Sows has got Pigs fourteen or fifteen

5th Went to Organise Sunday School raining in the morning no person there paid Doct Estes $10. for Mr Crews - clear’d off in evening

6th Raining in morning set Log Heaps & leaves on fire wind Blowing very hard I went to Mrs Hunts, etc etc —

7th Helping Mr Crews roll his Logs this morning I am going to Riceville working at new ground this morning & then fencing. Jordan Coltering — Balance plowing, sold Mr Thomas W Anderson my Crop Tobacco made 1856 for $12 pr 100 lbs round I wait 12 months for$500 Cash & Balance with Int Weather fair & Cool, & little more moderate this evening — — —

8th Fencing Plowing, Sent little Henry to shop & mill 2 Bus. Corn Sent & bring home 2 Bushels wyatt at work on Porch

9th Plowing for Corn Owens clearing shrubing for Corn in fresh field Jordan collering, Sent to Miles N Tucker agent for 1 Plow Single Horse
