1857 June 30th clear fair day.-

July 1st Cutting wheat, Abram Crews cutting Rained in evening a little clem weeding Tobacco by Crews - did not Rain much

2nd July Runing 4 Plows to day & weeding down Tobacco next to Mr Crews.s Sent Buck & Jerry Smith to mill 2 Turns Corn for meal also Sent Mrs Hunt 5 Bushels wheat for 5 Bus corn, Just swapt wheat worth $1.70 Bushel corn about $6 pr Barrel,- Henry better — Very Cool & we are sitting by the fire —

3rd Very Cool. Rained a fine Rain last night & this morning we replanted balance of Lot & fresh ground next to Crews finished by 10 & negroes planted 1 hour then cutting wheat,

4th July Cutting wheat Abram Crews Came again yesterday at 12 Oclock & we are trying to finish to day - wormed over fresh ground Tobacco soon this morning clem & Jerry Smith at work in Tobacco ground next to Crews Sent Hester & Rose to J. & both refused

5 Started to Charlott about settling up Mrs Moseleys matters,

6th Plowing Corn & weeding Tobacco & choping corn

7 returned from Charlotte at 12 Oclock Plowing & choping - dry & Hot.- Mr Williams & Davis came about 12 Oclock to day

8th Plowing Corn & Laying by fresh field & at stoney pint Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground on Johns branch, weeding down Lot Tobacco

9th Plowing Corn to day & fresh field Sandy will finish Plowing fresh ground Johns Branch at 12 Oclock finished weeding Lot Tobacco

10th Raining this morning, all had started to work warm growing weather

to get Her wheat next week If we can, it has been raining nearly all this week & to days is friday - desperate time we have had this week -

7th August 1857 Sewed Turnip Patch to day upper Corner summer Turnip seed sewed & in Lot the 8th a few sewed from Mr Yates,- Henry Sandy & Jordan

8th augt Toping Tobacco at Johns Branch Finishing Hilling up new ground this morning except a bottom too wet Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground next to Crews s fine weather clear growing weather ground very wet.

9th Went to Sunday school no teacher there all gone to Edge Hill about 18 or 30 scholars I stayed there till 12 Oclock Jennings Yates & Martha I. Dews taught

10th Tying up primings Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground Tobacco next to Crews -. fine shower rain yesterday Evening - very seasonable now &has been for sometime Corn very promising etc - Tobacco very sorry generally we took our Honey last week very good =Lila complaining last night & this morning sent for Mrs Neal & she had a child a Girl sometime in the day

11th fine Rain last evening we are this morning firing priminings cleaning out new new Barn & then Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground next to Crews & finished in the evening near night, Plowed in Lot till night

12th This morning toping & succoring Tobacco clear last night & this morning very seasonable weather, Sent Abram to Fannies this morning to see about machining wheat etc.

13th worked on road to day Grubing on branch By spring got up a few apples

1857 Thursday 23rd We are Plowing & Hilling up lot tobacco in morning & then Halling up wheat waggon & cart & all hands etc showering weather nannie gone to Mrs H finished hilling up new ground Tobacco —

Friday 24th My nannie coming home this morning " " nearly done halling up wheat will commence halling up Oats to day. working tobacco in Lot this morning. Sent 4 Bus. corn & 4½ wheat to Eat to yates. Carrd 1 Bus wheat for Crews - etc Fine weather about this time, no rain this week Buck & Jerry Smith gone to mill

Saturday 25th I went to Fannies, Stack some oats choping & thinning mountain field corn Rained a little Sunday evening after I returned from S S S C

26th Sunday Our folks had Holliday Yesterday -

26th little shower Rain in evening

27th Henry Harrowing Corn Jordan & Sandy Plowing Tobacco Balance Hilling it up Sent Sandy to Mr Neals after Corn lent them & give them ½ Bushel wheat

28th Henry Painting on Carriage House Sandy & Jordan Harrowing Corn, dry Hot weather Balance Hilling up fresh ground Tobacco by Crews

29 Finishing fresh ground tobacco toped & worked nannies by Cow rack Sandy Harrowing corn Halled leaves in stables Henry claiborne Jord -an & alse Stacking oats, trying to finish Dry Hot weather & Corn sufferingfor rain gone to stoney pint to chop & thin corn etc

30th Rained a fine Rain last Evening & night & we this morning replanted pt of our fresh ground next to Mr Crews — Finished stacking Oats yesterday - this morning clearing off there & fencing in Oats stacks - like for more Rain picking wood etc etc.

1857 Augt 26th Raining this morning fine weather fine weather, cutting out shoes shelling Corn spining worming & succoring Tobacco at new ground —, Sent Arch & Lowry back to day Finished at new ground rained all evening

27th Rained all night & still continues this morning We are doing but little making Baskets etc turned a little cool, no weather to maintain wheat. Henry made 2 rakes yesterday,

28th Rained tremendous hard all day yesterday This morning cleared off & fine weather Henry making cart tongue etc etc Balance Balance working on road from here to Stony pint etc etc, expect to go to mill to day

29th worming & succoring Tobacco at Johns Branch toping at new ground Henry & Jordan Sandy & little Henry gone to Capt Gilberts after Cotton fine weather for every thing to grow,

30th Fair clear day for Sunday school

31st & Sept 1st Thrashed wheat & finished about 3 Oclock and top Tobacco & wormed & succored -

Sept 2 I went to see Miss Sarah McCullock Toping Tobacco over close worming & succoring

3rd Daubing barn & finishing Toping Tobacco in evening pulling fodder at stoney p[o]int & Halling up primings. — Mrs Hunt here went down to Pringles for her.

4. Daubing Barn at Crews halling up primings from new ground -Expect to start to Raise barn to day cloudy & like for Rain this morning got 3 or 4 Logs round Daubing weaving House & barn back of Garden cloudy & Raining a little my wife Jerry & Sallie is gone to Fannies Sallie starts to school 5th Rained Hard last night, firing primings working on Barn at mountain this morning clearing of[f] Sallie starts to school 7th Sept.

1857 Sept 5th Tying up Blade fodder this evening & Turning primings and Tying up dry ones - Fed gone to Fannies

7th tying up primings all day & sent to Saw mill 1 Log 10 Long ¾ thick for floor

8th Sent to Saw Mill 1 Log 16 for Corn house 2 Turns Corn Sent 4½ Bushels for meal Hitched Rose yesterday to waggon Done very well Halling Logs to mill I went to Comptons yesterday to appraise property, - Pulling fodder to day nearly done 1 Blade stack — Sent 2½ Bushels wheat for flour & another Log for Corn House floor — Pulling fodder owens clearing & upper pt next to stoney pint,- cool & windy —

9th Sent 2 Logs to Day for my House floor Hitched Netty. worming & succoring Tobacco to day John’s branch & Crews clear fine weather Only very cool. Fannie here yesterday — worming & succoring at John’s branch & next to Crews

10th worming & succoring Lot & toping this morning & then pulling fodder by fresh ground Henry setting in Poles to stack fodder — I expect to go to Riceville to day — going to Hobble Fillmore this morning Fannie has sent Malissa home & her children except Catharine, and I send clem up there & Raymond she is to cloth them & pay four Dollars pr month as long as they stay, my wood rolls is brot Home by Lowry sent Fannie 1 Large Jug vinegar Pulling Fodder to day Tying up fodder this evening - —clear fine weather.
