1857 Oct 3rd Raining nearly all day firing Tobacco old prize Barn & steeming the one at Crews. Fanning out wheat etc etc etc-

4th went to Strait Stone & Nannie to her Mamas

5- I went to Riceville got no money finished worming & succoring Tobacco & put up 2 scaffolds at new ground that fell down Cutting all on Johns Branch to day- & Cutt in Lot 370 Sticks to day firing 2 Houses & finished old prize Barn & now firing at Crews

6. finished cutting in Lot all thats ripe & then cutting all thats at fresh ground next to Crews,- fine weather at this time,

1857 (Turn back 2 leaves)

Novr 7 My wife & Jerry gone to Fannies, choped round stumps where wheat seeded Sandy plowing

-8th To day & last I am at home by myself cloudy & like for rain warm damp weather

9th Long warm cloudy damp spell but has not rained much lately, firing Tobacco this morning, then shrubing corn field, Sandy Plowing for wheat between 2 Branches in fresh field,- Fed cutting out Shoes, etclet Crews have my cart & steers till 12 Oclock to hall up corn, abram is to work a day for the cart & steers ½ day— Nannie & Jerry got home about 12 Oclock

10th Plowing & Bushing in wheat, Halling up corn from stoney pint. Rained last night a fine shower, cleared off Cool We Hitched our oldest mule colt Jenny this morning to a Bush & she done very well

11th Sent to Mill 4 Bus corn meal & 2 Bushel wheat for flour Fed making Henrys shoes Balance shucking Corn & Plowing & sewing wheat to day - fine clear weather

1858 February 13th Snowed all night, wind N E 9 Oclock Snowing & Hailing fast & snow 9 or 10 Inches Deep, Desperate weather On every thing at this time,

14th Looks a little like clearing off not very Cold I fear we will loose a calf

14 Lambs to this time one is crippled I don't Know how, but drags one Leg – Snow about 10 or 11 Inches Deep & dont melt any to this time – started to court Sunday quite cold got my Hogs this morning from mountain myself & desperate weather

15 I returned at night to day Henry Halled 2 Logs to Yates Mill carried 2 Bags Corn for us 1 for overseer & brot back 2 for me Halled Some Ice broke flax & cut some old Logs in new ground

16th Halling Ice & wood to day fair pretty weather over Head — Jacob came down to day & got a Load of shucks & Fodder, Federick Cut a pair of shoes for Nannie Sallie & Jacob & Carried them home to make Sole & upper, give him thread also – Jacob got meat, Poker, Fat, etc

17th Halled another stack fodder from mountain Halling Out Straw Covered Ice in house Henry Halling wood from fresh ground cloudy & like for falling weather Sewed clover seed in wheat Lot this morning Cutting old Logs burning brush etc

18th malling & burning Logs at overseers house that Crews left last year alse swingling flax Shrubing where Crews cleared last year

19th Raining this morning before day & continued drizling a little all day but did not stop us from malling wood at overseers House, cold winters day

20th Snowed last night about 2 Inches Deep, rained & [water stain] night, disagreeable night

27th march. Finishing sewing Oats at stony pint & will finish there to day overseer getting Rafters for Corn shelling Room to be put to Corn houseHous shortly Jordan Coltering at Crews Piling wood & Rails finishing new ground fence Joining the mountain field to day Sewing Oats at Crews, LetBig Henry have 12 lbs Bacon this 27th day of March for 1 month, Jacob has been down after Blade fodder & Bacon & Caddles [Candles?] Mr EG Lewis cut spayed & marked 14th shoats this day & Turned out a Black one for a thats with PigSow Beautiful weather about this time –

28th Nannie & me & children went to Cedar Hill & Mr Jno D Hunts to day fine day —

29th Sewing Oats at Crews, Fencing around granary Lot this morning & then at new ground Piling wood & Rails, Jordan carried Black Boar to mountain springs woods Pasture with Hunt Sow etc, - & then Halled up one stack blade Fodder this morning - a little cooler this morning Jordan coltering crossing to Hill at overseers Malissa had a Boy Child this morning after sun Rise, Sent for Doct Thompson but the Boy did not get him,- Mrs Neal here Sent to Mill with Cart 3 Turns Corn all for us tho one is for overseer, but he will take one of ours ground at Mill & whats in his Bag will be ours Send also 2½ Bushels wheat for overseer, All to Yates Mill

30th Rolled Logs to day Did not get done

31st Rolled again to day & expect to finish

April 1st Finished rolling Logs this have Rolled in all nearly 3 daysmorning &

1858 April 1st 1st Henry Plowing for Corn on Branch, Sandy Plowing for Oats at Crews I am going down to Mr Millers about trying Garrot & Forest released Garrot Balance of Our Hands raking cleaning up new ground at Crews Fired leaves raked to day to night after it begun to Rain, raining moderately quite cool to day Mr Chumbly helped us roll Log tho very much complaining & to day he is laid up, Jordan Crossing at Crews for hilling, did not getting raking up there

2nd april 1858 This morning & last night was really a rainy & windy time, & to day The windy is Sev[ere] & Rains hard water coarses high my hogs all up last night & doing well as far as I know quite cool with the wind & Rain, took down Lugs in old prize Barn,= Overseer still in the House sick

3rd wind ceased this morning cloudy all day Halled Tobacco from mountain spring burn & Fresh ground Barn put it in new ^prizeBarn & – little in one Back of Garden,4th A Beautifull day Easter Sunday — 5th Negroes striping Tobacco for themselves Jerry & little Henry gone after Sweet Blade Seed my wife gone to Mrs Hunts — Fine day Rained again last night

6th Beded up Sweet Potatoe Patch & Planted 1½ Bus from Mr Farmers & 1 peck yams in Bed Plowed a part of Hill for Tobacco, gone to sewing Oats @ 12 Oclock at Crews, Sent Jerry down after Mr. Forest Gray mule Jim which I am to give $140. for payable next March 1859. to go to Plantation & take Netty away —

1858 april 6th Jordan Croping new ground at Crews & Began to make Hills late this evening, fixing Plows & halving hoes etc. Mr Forest has come up & agreed to take $30, too Boot between Netty & his mule which is made, & have only give him my note for $30 & let him have Netty & I am [a]foot still, Fine weather about this time,-

7th Sewing Oats at Crews to day, crossing new ground Crews cleared, & Hilling same —

8th Finished Sewing Oats 10th Oclock to day Jordan Coltering Plowing Tobacco Land at Crews Hilling Crews last years clearing & Plowing overseers Potatoe Patch etc Hitched Jenny my oldest ^mule to Plow to day & she done remarkable well,- Began to Rain about 10 Oclock &

9th Sent to shop 2 pr traces to make a little longer ps chain Sent to do it colter to pint 2 H Hoes to Lay swingletree & old Irons to Iron it sent for 2 back band hooks & bands to Iron Jerrys waggon wheels etc etc 4 Bushels Corn & 2 for overseer & 1 Log for Hhd staves by Jordan watching Logs Heaps striping Tobacco etc Jacobs mule got out of the stable & went down to Mr Forest, Jacob went after him - got 2 Bushels Oats more Haller & mule Bet etc

10th Plowing for Corn Beding Jordan & Buck Halling up fodder 2 stacks Balance Hilling at Crews’s to day fine weather

11th Fine day meeting at Straigtstone

12th cloudied up last evening & Rained nearly all night hard striping Tobacco Forking up manure in Cow pen this morning Raining all day nearly hard quite cool
