1853 Sept 20th Nannie & Sallie gone to Mr F. this morning in Rain 21st Cutting tops & working In Fodder to day

22, Henry gone to D P Millers to raise barn make ready to cut tobacco worming & succoring third Thirds Ground cloudy & like for Rain —

24 Began to Cut tobacco in new ground Yesterday cutting to day & yesterday all Finished Fodder except Tops fine weather

26. Housingnew ground Tobacco in Prize Barn Fair fine weather, worming & succoring –

28th Peter Died yesterday Buck, Sometime ago Brown another young steer sick with Postul lost 8 Cows Heifers Steers etc- to this day had to stop halling Rocks for under Pening of Barn on a/c of Browns being sick worming & succoring second yrs ground Skinning Logs for Tren Poles in Barn gather= =ing Peas Cotton etc etc

29th Raised Our prize Barn on Road Brown Died, wormed & succored over thirds yrs ground

30 Lost 10 Head cattle in 12 months all my work steers but one young one Cutting Tobacco in Second yr ground to day Some frost last night, one of our Hogs Dead Ann & alse came to me yesterday morning very soon to go with them home but was raising my barn & Capt E. Fitzg went

Oct 7th We have stack Our Tops worming & succoring Cutting & Housing Tobacco we have filled prize Barn new Barn at fresh ground & new Barn back of Garden have Cut upwards of 3500 Stacks & a good deal standing in Lot & fresh ground yet wrote to Pallison Boxley this morning & sent to Doct Whites Mill 10 Bushel Corn for meal when Capt Fitzgerald carrd Ann & alse home arch ran away next morning

1856 June 19 Doct thompson here yesterday to see Sandy, Nannie gone to Mrs Hunts this morning

20th Beding & Planting Lot of Tobacco fine season to Plant Tobacco – finished planting Lot

21st Laying by Corn in Johns fresh Sewed Peas there, choping out Corn on Branch & weeding Tobacco on Branch Johns.

23 began to Cut wheat Hired abram Crews he is cutting to day fine day – Jordan Lowry & Buck choping about in Potatoes etc - Just getting out very Hot weather –

24 Fine growing weather cutting wheat when we can working new ground tobacco this morning & then to cutting wheat as soon as Dew gets off Replanting by Bee Gums this morning Jordan & Buck going to mill 6 Bus card & will bring back 8 there

25th Cutting Rye & wheat weeding Tobacco on Branch & new ground ¬

25th Plowing some in Corn Lila & Lowry Bal Balance all cutting wheat except Fed Buck & Jordan began to cut wheat mondy & this

26. & 27 Cutting wheat & finished about 12 oclock Arch alse & Eliza stayed 1½ days replanted Lot & mountain to day. Shearing sheep – – –

28th Replanted over our Tobacco working out new ground Plowing corn 4 Plows to day F. W F & myself are going to Riceville to day Doct T yesterday here

30th Laying Buy Corn 4 Plows. Jordan Plowing or Harrow Lot Tobacco weeding Lot Tobacco Doct Thompson heresee Sandy to 25 times he has been I reckon, in all since Marchfine weather

July 1st clear morning Sent Henry to Mill 1½ Bushels wheat for flour Halled up Rye this morning Lila Plowing at stony pint Balance Plowing corn on Branch etc. Weeding Lot Tobacco

1856 July 5 I have this week been to Bottetourt School Brot Kate Home from Hollins Institute - at home they have been weeding tobacco choping out Corn & Laying by corn Sandy still very Low Doct Thompson here yesterday to see him etc etc,- they are this evening finishing at stony pint weeding Tobacco

9th Since the 5th we have Plowed a little been trying to Cut Oats Since Monday & Rained nearly all day yesterday Tuesday Bro Hunt Sent Henry & he cut ½ day Monday & stayed till Tuesday & Rained So I sent Him home Fanny W F. Sent Arch Monday Cut ½ the day monday none yesterday but striped Tobacco, this morning cutting Oats Abra ham Crews come too,- Jordan & Lowry Plowing Fed & abram weeding Tobacco at Stony Point cleared off

10th Henry, arch & Abram Crews Cut Oats yesterday & Henry Abram Crews & Jacob Cutting this morning & trying to get done by 12 oclock very raining Lowry & claiborne Plowing all the rest in Oat field,- cloudy & likely for Rain Mr Hunts Henry Cut Oats ½ Arch Cut Oats 1½ day 1 day striped Tobacco & ½ weeded not do much on acct of its raining, ground very wet Finished Cutting Oats 12 oclock ¬

11th Lowry & claiborne Plowing Balance hilling up Tobacco on Branch & new ground Henry gone to Mill 8 Bus corn& 3[?] Bus wheat for flour Bro Hunt Sent this morning to help us Cut oats & we are done, ¬— Doct thompson came to see Jordan again.- Alex Goodman stayed

11th at night warm & cloudy

12 Hilling up new ground Tobacco & trying to finish Laying by corn a little after 12 oclock to day

1856 Decr 26th A Beautiful day fixed Ice house this morning - Jordan Sandy & abraham gone to Fannies to day clear fine morning

27th Going to Republican Grove to day etc

28 My wife went to Mrs Hunts a good day

29. I went to Mr Hunts to Divide Mrs Colemans negroes etc went to see Shanks Worsham very sick etc etc.

30th Began to work at 12 Oclock Henry at work on shelter etc Jordan & Lowry halling Out Straw & leaves Sandy gone to meeting House with Tar. Fed & balance cutting fixing at new ground to burn Plant Bed etc — etc

31st Burning Plant Bed at new ground this morning Henry fixing shelter for plows got cathed in Snow Just about night Finished burning Dug up prepared ½ of the Patch 14 by 20 yds long

Thursday 1st Jany 1857 Began to snow last evening this morning snow about 4 or 5 Inches Deep we are striping Tobacco Jacob went to Fannies yesterday, cloudy this morning

Jany 2. 3. 4 We have been striping tobacco all this week Yesterday we halled wood till 12 oclock worked Clemam & Fillmore to carriage, worked very well indeed yesterday very windy & cold This morning clear & cold not quite done striping new Barn Prise,- One Lamb come this week, Snow not gone yet. Calm to day

4th Lowry gone to Fannies with Arch this evening to be clothed Hat & Blanket for $45.00till x next Christmas

5th Sent to Mill 2 Bags Corn [water stain] got 2 Turns meal there sent Log for

18th Jany 1857 we have had a dreadful night of it Peggy like dying all night Lester Coleman here Clem & Arch married etc & it commenced snowing some time in the night & this morning is Dreadfull on every living thing Peggy frequently inquires after her Miss Nancie, Snow drifted very much & I reckon Shoe deep or more — [?] Oclock, Same day Send for Doct Estes & Came about 11 Oclock & began to work On Peggy & She continued to get worse till Just before 2 she breathed her last while we were at Dinner tho Doct Gave her an injection of Castor Oil Spts Turpentine & soap Suds after she had a Passage in a few minutes She died, he also put on Blisters on her arms & ankles. etc, - she Died very Easy & Seemed to be pretty much in her senses to the last - paid Doct $2.00 Still Snowing hard wind blowing from N. E. & such a day I never saw in my life Snow has drifted very much

19th Snowed nearly all night & the Snow is about Knee deep generally & where it is drifted it is as deep as the fence & the wind has blowed the Snow all day like it was Snowing, the great= =est Snow Storm I ever saw allmost in my life. this morning & till nearly 12 Oclock we were cleaning the Snow out of our houses & dug the grave for Peggy But did not finish the coffin Mr F wyatt came & went to work on it about 2 Oclock in evening, done nothing also but Cut wood & make fires & feed, there was a bay mare came here yesterday Sunday in the storm
