1856 May 24th Millys Calf is a week or ten days old a Heifer we have Seven Lambs etc Jacob gone to Fannies to day - Election is over votes stand for Justices in this the 7th District Miles N Tucker 50 JWGraves 46. Saml T Miller 45. Thomas T Adams 38 & Doct John H Estes 32 votes for Sheriff in this Precinct Whitehead upwards of 60. Bennett about 13 for Commonwealth attorney Treadway Forest constable Jas P. Lewis overseer of the Poor for Comm. Yates 27 Tucker 18 Shelton Vincent 14 Shelton Saml T. 1.

25. Fair windy dry day Jordan Lowry & buck Sick Wed Corn yesterday Saturday by Johns’s spring Coltering before the Homes & Harrowing

26th Cutting off Second years ground Hills Henry Plowing in Corn – cool & windy Hester & Mr Faris Jack this day

27th Doct T. has been here 13 or 14 times to see Jordan Lowry & Buck Jordan particularly sick Weeding & Plowing Corn clear & windy my Bro Jonathon here at this time,- Tobacco Plants fine & beginning to dry a little —

28th Weeding & Plowing corn in Johns field

29th Plowing & weeding corn Planted Tobacco On Johns Branch yesterday morning as we had a late shower of Rain night before

30 went to Court House this day -

30 Made Sheep Pen Hilling Potatoe Patch working & Plowing corn etc very clear & dry & windy Sandy taken Sick yesterday

31 weeding & Plowing corn Sandy in House

June 1st Doct Thompson came to see the sick Jordan Lowry Sandy & abraham all sick Doct. Thompson has been here since 1st aprl about 14 or times I think Jordan bad off

1857Put it out She is dreadfully burnt from Jany16th knees up nearly to her chin & We had only one small bottle of Pain Killer & had to Send to Mr Adams at 5 oclock Jordan got back about light brought only 1 vial of P D. Killer & 2 of Roses from adams - she seem much easier than she was before day we are cutting big growth in new ground Halling wood To day waggon & Cart – my hand & thumb is burnt badly & we applied the Pain Killer only & sweet oil & a little Cream in it — Peggy is badly burnt from her Knees up I went to Anderson & settled my Acct & fannie whites,- all to finishing, very cold day Mr. Pannill Came here & fixed Colo Smiths matters, etc Halled wood to day waggon & Cart. Bot. & paid for 1 pr Kid Gloves of Barber & Thompson. Paid Doct Thompson for Mrs Hunt the $6 She gave me for him & took his Rect

17th I went to meeting & from there to Mr Tuckers take him & his wifes relinquishment for the Grand of Land whereon Joshua Shields Died - & when I got back Peggy is a great deal worse & I sent for Doct Thompson forthwith & Sister coleman also who is here at this time She had been been Puking off & on all night with Puking something like Black vomit. no Passage since she was burnt & Jordan returned about 9 oclock& said Doct Thompson would start here as soon as the moon was up and it Commenced Snowing & wind severe from N. E. & N. W. Severe night. no Doct Thompson this morning yet & I shall send for Doct Andrew ThompsonJno H Estes in the Course of One Hour If Dr J. C. does not come

18th Jany 1857 we have had a dreadful night of it Peggy like dying all night Lester Coleman here Clem & Arch married etc & it commenced snowing some time in the night & this morning is Dreadfull on every living thing Peggy frequently inquires after her Miss Nancie, Snow drifted very much & I reckon Shoe deep or more — [?] Oclock, Same day Send for Doct Estes & Came about 11 Oclock & began to work On Peggy & She continued to get worse till Just before 2 she breathed her last while we were at Dinner tho Doct Gave her an injection of Castor Oil Spts Turpentine & soap Suds after she had a Passage in a few minutes She died, he also put on Blisters on her arms & ankles. etc, - she Died very Easy & Seemed to be pretty much in her senses to the last - paid Doct $2.00 Still Snowing hard wind blowing from N. E. & such a day I never saw in my life Snow has drifted very much

19th Snowed nearly all night & the Snow is about Knee deep generally & where it is drifted it is as deep as the fence & the wind has blowed the Snow all day like it was Snowing, the great= =est Snow Storm I ever saw allmost in my life. this morning & till nearly 12 Oclock we were cleaning the Snow out of our houses & dug the grave for Peggy But did not finish the coffin Mr F wyatt came & went to work on it about 2 Oclock in evening, done nothing also but Cut wood & make fires & feed, there was a bay mare came here yesterday Sunday in the storm

1857 April 3rd Carrying Manure in Garden this morning Breaking Colts to work bushing Oats, Raking leaves at new ground claiborne & little Henry Plowing for corn very cool & dry & I think all the fruit Killed with cold, about this time Colts Rose worked tolerable Netty done very badly. Kicked & Jumped very much, she would not work with Pompy at all, but we made work some by herself, Halling out leaves on corn field from new ground in evening -

4th Putting manure on Plant Beds this morning Plowing for Corn, Raking leaves, weather yet cloudy - 3 Sows has got Pigs fourteen or fifteen

5th Went to Organise Sunday School raining in the morning no person there paid Doct Estes $10. for Mr Crews - clear’d off in evening

6th Raining in morning set Log Heaps & leaves on fire wind Blowing very hard I went to Mrs Hunts, etc etc —

7th Helping Mr Crews roll his Logs this morning I am going to Riceville working at new ground this morning & then fencing. Jordan Coltering — Balance plowing, sold Mr Thomas W Anderson my Crop Tobacco made 1856 for $12 pr 100 lbs round I wait 12 months for$500 Cash & Balance with Int Weather fair & Cool, & little more moderate this evening — — —

8th Fencing Plowing, Sent little Henry to shop & mill 2 Bus. Corn Sent & bring home 2 Bushels wyatt at work on Porch

9th Plowing for Corn Owens clearing shrubing for Corn in fresh field Jordan collering, Sent to Miles N Tucker agent for 1 Plow Single Horse

1858 May 25th Plowed Sweet Potatoes to day, we are replanting Corn & trying to get done, Jordan Crossing new ground at mountain Spring - I went to shop got mike shod & went to Mrs Hunts

26 I went to Jacobs they are Halling there & have not replanted corn yet, we are fixing our wet Land in Lot for planting scattering & Plowing in manure Jordan crossing at new ground dry Hot weather, replanting cotton by Lila & Malissa

27. Scattering & Plowing in manure in Lot & Hilling & Jordan crossing at new ground T R Shepherd sent down here for Lambs & we sent him 3 Lambs to be paid for at CH

28 & 29 Replanting corn fixing Lot for Tobacco I went to Election & stayed all day Jordan crossing new ground Bushing Oats etc Began to weed Corn

29 Bushing wheatnot done weeding Corn, & Plowing Halled up stack fodder this morning starting to Riceville with our Lugs this morning – cloudy & cool I went to Jacobs & halled out manure all day yesterday & this evening instead of Bushing wheat after we got Back from Riceville we went to Planting Tobacco on Branch & in Lot by^Top stack but did not finish at neither place on acct of its raining

30th Still cloudy & like for Rain Nannie & Sallie gone to Mr Hunts me & Jerry going to Straitstone

31st Nannie & myself went to Mr Hunts Chumbly & wife both sick we are planting Tobacco in Lot this evening & Beding planted all but high part of Lot & planting that replanted second years Land at Crews, Jerry went after Dr Estes for my overseer to day - Mr John Hunts wife Lags very Low, I went security with JDH to Browns Estate for $287.40 cleared off in evening Rained this night my wife at Mr Hunts
