1857 March 4th All Hands malling Pilling wood Buck Halling to House, Henry & Claiborne will go to Plowing in Lot at 12 Oclock weather a little moderated this morning

5th All hands gone to malling Plowing etc But it set in to Raining & we are going to strip Tobacco in new prize Barn Jerry started yesterday morning wednesday to go with Henry Clay to go with Mrs Clement to CH Lowry Ran away & come down here first of this week I sent Jerry with him back & I hear that Malissa is cutting [swills?] etc etc etc got a Letter form Jacob P. the 1st of this month, answered it forthwith & wrote to Cousin Cleo too to council him at Capt Boxleys

6th Burning Brush malling Prizing Tobacco Shelling corn & then Plowing up Lot for Tobacco. Turned off cool & clear Mr Crews help me striped Tobacco yesterday went to see Cap Fitzgerald to day & settled with him for Fannie W Fitzgerald as Gudn & Exer & took in her bonds for Hire & Rent 1856 —

7th Very cold & windy this morning Sent Jordan to Mill 1 Barrel corn for meal first of the new crop we have sent to mill 2 Turns at mill to bring is old corn, Sent Handcock 3 Gallons Vinigar malling in new ground Plowing Kate & Sallie came down here this evening

8th Nannie Kate & Jere went to meeting to Riceville very cool cloudy day -

9th Plowing malling & cleaning out fence Row around new ground expect Halling up Oats fodder & chaff this evening Cool & cloudy & like for falling weather Lent Andrew Crews a horse to go to mill to day

1857 April 17th Plowing for corn Coltering in new ground Hilling & coltering Second years ground, & trying to finish Hilling that this week very Cool weather this week, have not finished planted Our Sweet Potatoes -

18th Rained all night last night & to day nearly all day very cold Rain, indeed, Jerry carried Sallie up to Fannies yesterday - & we are to day opening Our Second rate Tobacco shelling corn etc etc - covering Irish Potatoe Patch this evening with old Straw Lent Bro. Mason Sam Slick a Book belonging to Bro. John D Hunt

19th Rained all day nearly went to Sunday school nobody there Kate come down nightlast

20 Went to Court wind blew very hard & the weather very cool all day got back same night. Our Poeple cutting in new ground & finished cutting house Logs Piling Logs heaps wood & Brush till 12 Oclock then to Plowing & Hilling & Jordan coltering croping, after morning a little,

21st Nannie gone to Mrs Hunts Jerry gone to School Hilling Plowing for Corn & Croping new ground cloudy & like for rain or snow very cool indeed for the season Finished Hilling second years ground & began to Hill at new to day Plowing at mountain for corn, very cool this evening

22nd Plowing for corn at mountain coltering Hilling at new ground, Halled out Rails this morning & wood — cloudy & like for falling weather cool & windy

23rd Finished Plowing for Corn began to Plow at Stoney pint yellow corn in Tobacco land Hilling & coltering at new ground

1857 April 23rd weather moderated a little Mr Wyatt came to work at 12 Oclock to day

24th april 1857 Planting Corn at stoney pint. Coltering croping & Hilling at new ground

25 Halled up balance of House Logs at new ground Halled out 3 stacks Hilling & Planting Corn at Stoney pint. alse & little Henry droped[,] Sandy & claiborne opened beds Henry covered with Harrow. Beautiful day, & moderate Finished planting at stoney pint.

26th Went to Sunday School pretty day ————

27th Sent to Yates Mill 2 Turns 4 Bus. Corn & to get 4 Bushels meal get Henry Clay Shod Sent for 1 new Dutch Plow Hoe & sent to strap & p[o]int 1 Plow Hole & 1 Hilling Hoe, - Hilling at new ground & croping - Henry dragging bottom Sandy Harrowing beds in fresh ground like for Rain this morning ————— Planting corn by fresh ground Barn this evening

28th Henry helped Mr Wyatt on house to day Planting corn 1 Harrow 1 Laying off Jordan Coltering Balance Hilling —

29th Halled up fodder & oats to day coltering Hilling & Planting corn to day by the fresh ground Barn, - covering door on House this morning – – – – – Henry helping Mr Wy again - very cool

30th Planting corn Hilling this morning Croping & Coltering new ground - cloudy & like for falling – Give Abram Crews ½ Bus. Seed Corn for helping me fight fire when some person set fire to our mountain field. all hands except Jordan & Buck laying off & planting Corn

May 1st Planting Corn in fresh field all hands except Jordan & Buck Coltering & laying off

1857 June 2nd Nannie & me went to Fannies & carried her Buggy home I take 1 Sette 1 Harness @$15Our folks thining corn & Plowing & weeding at stoney pint,- fine weather at this time —

3rd. Replanting corn at mountain field. & weeding corn to day Carried all our Tobacco off This day - cool weather this morning

4th June, Plowed Tobacco Lot & scattered manure Plowing & weeding corn etc,- picking Plant Beds about this time,

5 June. Plowing & weeding corn, this day I went to Pittsya Court House

6th Plowing & weeding corn this day - Sent Mrs Hunt 5 or 600 collard Plants& some Potatos to Plant lent Miss Neals a Horse to Plow ½ day today

7 went to sunday school & we all went to Mrs Hunts pretty weather

8th Hester & Mr Fariss Jack this day. Plowing & weeding corn in field fresh Claiborne at stoney pint Plowing wrote to Doct White to go & see Fannies Jerry & Sent Letter to his Mill,-

9th Mrs Hunt Owes me for 1 Bottle Perry davis’s Pain Killer sent by Jerry, weeding & Plowing Corn in fresh field to day 10 Fine Rain yesterday & we planted some Tobacco in fresh ground & this morning we finished there & drawing plants & going on to new ground,- Planted my wifes Patch at Cow Pen this morning nearly finished planting new ground,-

11th another fine rain yesterday evening Picked & manured our Plant Beds

July 1st Cutting wheat, Abram Crews cutting Rained in evening a little clem weeding Tobacco by Crews - did not Rain much

2nd July Runing 4 Plows to day & weeding down Tobacco next to Mr Crews.s Sent Buck & Jerry Smith to mill 2 Turns Corn for meal also Sent Mrs Hunt 5 Bushels wheat for 5 Bus corn, Just swapt wheat worth $1.70 Bushel corn about $6 pr Barrel,- Henry better — Very Cool & we are sitting by the fire —

3rd Very Cool. Rained a fine Rain last night & this morning we replanted balance of Lot & fresh ground next to Crews finished by 10 & negroes planted 1 hour then cutting wheat,

4th July Cutting wheat Abram Crews Came again yesterday at 12 Oclock & we are trying to finish to day - wormed over fresh ground Tobacco soon this morning clem & Jerry Smith at work in Tobacco ground next to Crews Sent Hester & Rose to J. & both refused

5 Started to Charlott about settling up Mrs Moseleys matters,

6th Plowing Corn & weeding Tobacco & choping corn

7 returned from Charlotte at 12 Oclock Plowing & choping - dry & Hot.- Mr Williams & Davis came about 12 Oclock to day

8th Plowing Corn & Laying by fresh field & at stoney pint Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground on Johns branch, weeding down Lot Tobacco

9th Plowing Corn to day & fresh field Sandy will finish Plowing fresh ground Johns Branch at 12 Oclock finished weeding Lot Tobacco

10th Raining this morning, all had started to work warm growing weather
