1857 May 1st Planting Simblings & Rice Beans to day - cloudy & like for Rain to day — Fountain Wyatt left last night worked 3 days this week & nearly done. Sick

2nd Planting Corn in fresh ground Owens clearing & finished that & began at mountain rain stoped them Just before night laying off that, Jordan & Buck coltering — I went to Mr Millers - rained nearly all night & to day we are striped Tobacco rained all day & as hard as I ever saw in my life, branches very Light, Halled from Owens Barn 1 Load Tobacco to strip to new prize Barn, - etc

3 Clearing off this morning & went to S School

4th Rained all night & Creeks very high This morning striping Tobacco - in barn Back of Garden It has been raining nearly ever since last ^nightfriday Arch Started & could not cross the creek at Mrs Tuckers On a Horse. Worshams Mill ^damgone they say & yates nearly gone & Dam broke Dews Dam broke, yet Raining Millers Dam broke - & land very much washed

5th Cleared cool & fair to day Halled to new prize Barn Owens or mountain spring Barn of Tobacco & striping to day - fixing for Riceville tomorrow - waggon & cart,Second Rate & Lugs

6th Went to Riceville Waggon & Cart 2 Loads of Tobacco 23.32 lbs Balance hilling at new ground

7th Finished striping Tobacco to day Raining morning, Mr. Crews helped me, finished turned out our cattle this morning. -

8th Raking up manure this morning Henry & Jordan coltering at new ground

1858 May 12 Very cool & Windy, wind from East wind blew hard all night, Hilling on Johns Branch & trying to finished there this Lugs^{& Picked Plant Beds}finished I am going to allen Scruggs to get him If I can to help Jas B Faris prize Tobacco,

13th Jordan coltering new ground,- began to colter & Hill Second years ground at Mountain this morning Little fixing his machine to get shingles,- fixing another colter this morning - Picked Plant Beds.

14th Jordan coltering new ground balance Hilling at fresh ground & cutting them off Henry went with waggon up to Cedar Hill to hall Logs out of new ground halled 9 to Worshams & left 4 or 5 to Hall yet, we have finished planting greens in Garden,- Hester ranaway at Jacobs halling Logs with Jim but did not thank the Lord hurt any thing much, worsham is to saw the Logs into weather boarding Square edged Plank & slats to put smoke house 3 or 4 Inches wide & ¾ think [thick] to Keep out rats after its daubed the Plank we want to cover a shelter for waggon Carr^d 2 Turns 4 Bus. 18th waggon & cart Halling out manure Balance Hilling at mountain, Sandy with Henry & Jordan Halling out manure — Very hard rain in evening & after it we [drea?] Tobacco Plants

1858 Novr 2nd All at Cedar Hill Wyatt sick Henry & chumbly finished shingling this day & 3rd wound up House, covered negroes Houses Daubed Two & Chimneys etc Henry Pressed out Cider Balance Cutting wood, Halled wood & same

4th fixing up there finished sewing wheat ^^{nearly 15 Bushels sewed}

5. Began to move Halled 4 Loads Nannie Went up in morning & stayed at home Rained a little nearly all day moved Lila ^^wentup this morning, - carried up all safe but some chickens got smothered - & expect to try & finished tomorrow Friday ^Saturday 6th the 6 If it does not Rain —

9 Halling up Corn waggon & Cart

10th Finished Halling up Corn here & Halled 1 Load wood Henry Carr^d 2 Logs to worsham mill & ½ Bbl corn for meal & got 1 Turn which was there Shucked a little corn ^{Mr Lewis}altered my shoats ^{Buck & Robt & Kitty had Blankets at aspen Grove}at Aspen Grove 26 - Turned out 1 Boar & ^{claiborne Rhoda & Lila had Blankets here Cedar Hill}1 Sow more making 2 young Boars & 2 young sows & 4 old ones,-

11th Began to shuck Corn in morning & began to Rain & stoped us, shelled Corn Cleaned out nubbin House etc etc overseer cut out shoes for negroes etc Jerry went down home in evening- & Chumbly [lost?]

1858 Decr 14th I went to Capt Fitzgeralds for Fannie to day but did not see him went to Aspen Grove, wrote for Bro. Yates nearly ½ the day, gave out Malissa 1½ Bus meal & a p^s Bacon, Cothran striping Tobacco in new prize Barn, Halled leaves in evening sent Buck to Mill with 2½ Bus. wheat for him & let Miss Neals have 2 Bushels — Has not rained to day but cloudy —

15 Rained nearly all day some Striped Tobacco & went to Worsham saw mill

16_ Chumbly & Cothran here to day Mr Cothran Came about 12 or one at work on his overseers House Henry Halling Rocks Planks & p^s Brick from Mr Hunts that he gave me

17th Mr Cothran & Chumbly are here at work On Overseers house, Mr Cothran spayed & marked my shoats here except one sow shoat got out, fine weather, Halled some plank from Mill, & owe Worsham for sawing a little & nailing on 2 pr s & shoes

18 All here at work on overseers house & finished about night Henry halled 2 Loads of wood about night,- at aspen Grove Fed & Buck halling leaves fixing shelters etc --

1859 Janry 4th Fixed Gate here. Halling & Cutting wood, Henry went to Worsham Mill for Slab plank to fix House for Rhoda, etc quite a cold windy day -

5th Henry went to Yates Mill Carried a Log for Hd^ds staves got Tobin Shod before, carried an ax to upset but did not bring it back. Mr Chumbly finished shingles enough for Smoke House fixed Table in House Jerry Smith & & little Henry Cutting wood Claiborne Malling wood. fine day, Henry in evening went to Run water or hill side Ditches in far Lot,- Mrs Hunt stayed, here last night & sent my Cow Home to day -

6th Halling Leaves & stoping Gullies in far Lot all this day - & raking out Hill Side Ditches, fine day

7th Sent Henry to worsham saw mill for stab plant for clems House, Balance Malling & cutting wood in pines by or opposite overseers House - — Sent to Bro. Hunts for Stray Bull for our cows.

8th I went to meeting - Henry Halling wood & went after Rhoda & Charles Allen, overseer & Claiborne little Henry etc making bridges to Spring & Hall wood etc — finished

9 went to meeting - cloudy & tremendous cold yesterday & to day -

10 I went to Riceville settled with Mr anderson ^{I owe him $1597} Halled & cut wood till evening & then fixed for burning plant Bed -

11 Burning plant Bed here on Road Cothran cutting Halling Rails & stocks to mill grubing Halling wood etc
