1857 June 17th Henry Did not get back till late & yesterday & did not get my sheep from Fannies weeding & Plowing corn at Stoney pint began there last evening - fair clear morning I engaged with Mr Williams the Painter to Paint our House & Porches Out side for $45. & to Paper 2 rooms at 30¢ pr paper, about the 4th June made the bargain & sent to Richmd for Paints & oil & Paper by Misses B. & Thomp =son etc- etc- got the Oil & Paints the 19th June for them& pd

18th A Fine Rain & season yesterday to day we finished planting our new ground over & nearly done by Crews’s replanted fresh ground by Johns spring & all Nannies - Picking & manuring Plant Beds one more time,

19th Jordan gone to mill this morning carried 4 Bushels for standing Turns, to get 3 Turns meal & 1 Turn flour at mill & card 3 D. P Hoes Weeding Corn & mill finished Picking Plant Bed & weeding Corn etc. Henry & myself going after Paints & oil etc at Rice, fine season at thistime

20th Finished weeding corn at stoney pint weeding & Coltering at mountain -Harrowing corn in Owens fresh ground,

21st went to meeting at Strait Stone

22nd Fine Rain last night this morning Sent to Bro. Blanks & Mr D Scruggs & got plenty of Tobacco plants to finish our lot & fresh ground next to Crews began to Bed & Plant after Dinner & Kept on till night, quite cool, I have got swiming in my head again Mrs Hunt Sent 5 Bus hils of corn to Yates for me

1857 June 30th clear fair day.-

July 1st Cutting wheat, Abram Crews cutting Rained in evening a little clem weeding Tobacco by Crews - did not Rain much

2nd July Runing 4 Plows to day & weeding down Tobacco next to Mr Crews.s Sent Buck & Jerry Smith to mill 2 Turns Corn for meal also Sent Mrs Hunt 5 Bushels wheat for 5 Bus corn, Just swapt wheat worth $1.70 Bushel corn about $6 pr Barrel,- Henry better — Very Cool & we are sitting by the fire —

3rd Very Cool. Rained a fine Rain last night & this morning we replanted balance of Lot & fresh ground next to Crews finished by 10 & negroes planted 1 hour then cutting wheat,

4th July Cutting wheat Abram Crews Came again yesterday at 12 Oclock & we are trying to finish to day - wormed over fresh ground Tobacco soon this morning clem & Jerry Smith at work in Tobacco ground next to Crews Sent Hester & Rose to J. & both refused

5 Started to Charlott about settling up Mrs Moseleys matters,

6th Plowing Corn & weeding Tobacco & choping corn

7 returned from Charlotte at 12 Oclock Plowing & choping - dry & Hot.- Mr Williams & Davis came about 12 Oclock to day

8th Plowing Corn & Laying by fresh field & at stoney pint Plowing & Hilling up fresh ground on Johns branch, weeding down Lot Tobacco

9th Plowing Corn to day & fresh field Sandy will finish Plowing fresh ground Johns Branch at 12 Oclock finished weeding Lot Tobacco

10th Raining this morning, all had started to work warm growing weather

1857 July 10th Wm Williams came last night one more Horse, Raining this morning & doing but little Warm fine growing weather If the ground gets wet,- Killed Lamb to day - cleared off but littlerain Finished Halling up fresh ground on Johns Branch choping in corn nearly done laying by fresh field with Plows gone to stoney pint to day at 12. runing next to corn —

11th Painting top of House to day in evening Came a very hard Rain some Hail & a real Gust,- Blowed down our fencing — etc etc

12th went to Sunday school little rain this evening Nannie Jaw & tooth swelled very much this week I was sick yesterday myself

13th Replanted Tobacco this morning our Plowing Corn at Stoney pint choping & Hilling up Tobacco at new ground Fine day my wife gone to Mrs Hunts

14th clouday this morning finishing Painting top of House - Plowing corn working new ground Tobacco fine weather ——

15th Rained last night & cloudy & like for Rain this morning began to cut Oats Fed & clem at new ground To make Paste to put paper in a room a little allum, & Gum arabic,

16th Cutting Oats to day Abram Crews here Sandy Plowing Fed at new ground Painters done about 9 Oclock & started Paid them $45

17. 18. 19 Hilling up Tobacco Cutting Oats & Plowing in corn. 19th went to meeting & Sunday school

20. 21. 22. 23 working new ground Tobacco went to Court Halling up wheat & finished cutting Oats 21st Mr Overby & his wife here & children etc etc etc

Decr 17. 1860 Corn Oats etc gone to day after corn Mr Hubbards Milly had a cow calf last night all my Shoats up 2 Boars, gone Bot 236 lbs Pork of Allen Scruggs @ $8½ pr 100 lbs.

18th Went down to aspen Grove, to see Hester sick all day to day & left her sick, but I thought about night she was a little easier, made arrangements to Kill 11 Hogs down there, leave one, making arrangements to Kill 2 Here, & may be some I may buy tomorrow, Halled & Cut & Malled wood to day,- cloudy & like for falling weather, to night,-

19th. Killed our 2 Piggs here to day & Bot Two out of drove for us & Killed them, Henry went to mill this morning to Whiteheads carrd 1 Turn Corn 1 Turn wheat for negroes here & carried 1 Bus. wheat for Henry & Malissa, & 1 Bushel wheat for Ben promised him for faithful work with machine in fall when hired to me he has gone down to aspen grove to Kill 11 Hogs there & get overseer have his but since night it has set in to raining & we may not Kill there in morning Jerry came here this morning & let him have some sole leather for his shoes Hester has got well I heard this morning bot of Mr Williams my 2 hogs & 8 for Mr Hunts plantation,-

20th. I went to Plantation & fixed every thing there & 21st I went to CH.- Cut & Halled wood cleaned out Hog pen & in evening halled leaves

22 Returned from CH. Halling & cutting wood Bob here to day - -
