1858 Jany 134th I went to Plantation Bybees for Mr John D Hunt. to Hillfield & to Mr shields & sent to Colo Smiths Plantation to see about Hiring a Cook for Jacob have not got her, Cutting & Halling wood Henry Riving boards & stop Ice pond on Road to day, looks very much like for falling weather –

15th Raining again this morning it has rained every few days ever since Christmas nearly the ground uncommonly wet Nannie & Jerry went to Mrs Hunt last evening, Striping Tobacco this morning -- Raining nearly all day did not quite finish the Tobacco in old prize Barn 7 Lambs to this day - Hunt Sow got Pigs 9 in number yellow sow has 6 the other Two 13 all look well

16 went to meeting House Henry & Jerry Smith gone to Jacobs to Hall wood leaves etc

17th Fannie W. & Cate came down 16th stayed at Home to day - Hunt Sow got 9 Pigs- cutting last Saturday ¬

18. Cutting wood to burn Plant Bed on Road Hitched Netty again worked by herself very well etc etc — —

19 Cutting in new ground & Halled wood 2 Plows Running - Halled up 1 stack fodder from mountain I go Riceville to settle my business with Anderson Clement & Doct Thompson

20th Burning Plant Bed on road I went Mr Kelleys Jacobs & mount airy to send letter to JDH

21st Finishing off Plant Bed on Road & Sewed & fenced & covered it to day - & then expect to work Hester to waggon - cloudy moderate weather

22nd working Netty to day Halling Rails around corn fieldcutting in new ground

23rd Halled out straw this morning Cutting Henry Halling wood to day Netty at work

21st Janry1859 Kate & Mr Dallas gone up To Fannies Mr Dallas gone on to Mount Calvery to Bro Masons meeting & I sent Bro. Mason $20 Collected of Bro Hunt by Mr Dallas - In the evening I went to See Bro. Hunt who is sick, & while there it began to lighten I started for home rode very fast Just as I got to my stable it began to Rain & the wind blew & caught me in stable & such a Tornado I never Saw, blew off the Top of our chimny Fodder Stack of Tops & blew one Blade Stack all over the field & some in the woods & nearly all of fence from last years ground on by spring next to House blew Top off Rhodas House part of Henrys & clems 6 or 8 Trees in yard blowed down & shingles off Kitchen & Granary & some boards off stable, one Barn of clements & all of Mr Kelleys Oats stacks down, & like to have Turn Ours over Charles allen got caught Coming from Spring lost his Piggin one shoe & his Hat, & he said the wind liked to have carried him away - all of Our hands from aspen Grove & overseer & nearly all of Bro Hunts helping us fix up the fence cover the houses are here to day & will not get done I fear but Thanks be to God none of our lives are lost,-

22nd Fencing pulling up fodder stack etc etc all day had about 25 hands covered houses etc

23rd cool day -

24 went to aspen Grove, our folks cutting up Trees in yard Halling wood etc Mr Chumb went to Mount Airy to day

1859 Feby 15th Chumbly fixing his House floor Tight Henry halling Rails clem shrubing Balance cutting Logs for stable etc etc Still cloudy & like for Rain

16th Henry claibourne & little Henry went to aspen Grove to strip Tobacco,- I went to mount airy & then down there,- Chumbly & the Balance skinning Slab Timber & he riving, & Covering House & cleaning out old shop etc to burn - when we get out of wood, etc

17th Henry claiborne & Henry came ^home this morning brot from aspen Grove ^ brot^ Our Carriage, Chumbly triming Orchard in Corn field filling up Gullies clem & Jerry Smith Grubing Claiborne & little Henry plowing, Henry gone to Thos Hodnetts to help him Roll Logs - went between 9 & 10 Oclock - - - -

18th Raining again, Piling & counted shingles from Robt Walker & then they all but Jerry Smith went down to aspen Grove to strip Tobacco Striping back of Garden; Raining nearly all day, very wet time it has Rained nearly every day this week Some, warm for the time of year & has been all this week

19 I went to Mr Vaughans claiborne & little Henry at aspen Grove Striping Tobacco Henry & Mr. Chumbly gone to Mr Kelleys to Roll Logs, - cloudy & Raining a little all day, Sorter drizling -

20th Still cloudy & warm,

21st I went to Court yesterday to Day Returned Halling Rails fencing etc - Halling wood

1959 Given out negroes here & at Plantation nov 19 their winter shoes except Pal, cleared of[f] very pretty day =

Novr 21 I went to Court, Rained all the evening Come back in Rain me & Mr J.P. Lewis Halled some Rails to fence in fodder stack Fed & Sandy shoemaking began to stripTobacco

22nd Set up Hhd made Cow Pen etc etc

23rd Finished shoemaking except my shoes Fed making them sent Sandy home & sent after Cart Fanning out wheat & Finished, I went with Mrs Hunt down to See about her Corn nearly all nubbins Finished up Our wheat as follows - Used & Sewed 19 Bushels Fanned & put in 3 Hhd 75½ Do. Bot of Kelley 20 Bus chumney got - - In Hhd in my Granary 27½ - 27½ In 4 Hhd in my Granary122 Bus Began to Halled up Logs for stable to day

24th Halling Logs for stable malling & cleaning up in new ground ^little Henry gone to Yates to get 2 Bus. Corn in meal for mutton Sold Wright Yates Miller -

25 Halling Logs Rocks ps s. for well Cutting & cleaning up in new ground I went to Grastys Sale, clerk it for him gave me $3. went back this day got some things I bot, sent waggon halled wood & the evening Henry carried 1 Log to whitehead saw mill for sheeting 2½ wheat for overseer & 2½ for me etc —

26 Sent Cart & Fan Home to aspen Grove Henry Halling wood, Balance Cutting & malling etc

1859 Decr 17th Mr Fox here yet - left about 10 or 11 Saturday self – & Horse worked on well in evening & Layed Hath in negroes House Piled shingles etc stoped Raining in evening

18th Stayed at home to day - -

19 went to Court. Chumney at work on well House & Jerry Smith Henry Halling wood claiborne & little Henry cutting & malling Rails & wood

20th Raining a little this morning working on Stable to day putting up rafters Sawing out doors facing of etc = I went down to Mrs Hunts with her Sent my horse to shop this evening by Charles,

21st worked on Stable, claiborne Jointing shingles little Henry & Smith Dawbing House in evening I went to Sale of Mrs Hunts Land, no Sale, at all, Mr Tompkins here on my return Fox came at night Mr T stayed all night

22. Mr T. left. Fox Finished well, Henry & claiborne with him till Dinner cleaning out & finished well HenryLittle Henry& chumbly at work on Stable claiborne & Henry & Smith went to new ground malling & cutting, Jerry went down to Plantation aspen Grove Kelley carried my hog home & got 3¼ VinegarGallons

23 working on Stable. Sent Henry to Mill Turn wheat for us 2½ & 2 Bus for chumny. brot back plank & bag Corn meal brot back — I have had sick head ache all day

24 Sent Henry to mill got Plank his own flour & Bens. worked on stable & negroe House & Rounding & Jointing Shingles I went down to warranting at Mr Millers about Irbys & Wm Yates Debts done nothing –
