19th april 1860 Striping Tobacco, Raining nearly all day

20 I went to Sarah McCullock & aspen Grove & told Cothran to let negroes eat 10 Bus. wheat more than leaving upwards of 20 BusHalling out Manure here & hilling – moved Cows to day ¬– fine weather

21st Sent Turn Corn to Mill & brot back whatwheat Planting Corn next to Capt whiteheads

22nd We went to aspen Grove & I went on to Strait Stone M. H. to prayer meeting

23rd Finished Planting Corn except Lots this day Haling Out Straw & stacking it by new Stable, scattering manure & fencing Lot next to woods. — Mrs Lucy Ann Clements Broke up from Johns D Hunts place this day give me up the Keys. John P Hunt Matty & Alice all came here to day & L A Clement Hunt came Saturday –takes Doran, @ $6 pr month & she gave me the Keys & delvd up every thing

24th Fencing & Plowing Lots for Corn Nannie went over for Mrs Worsham to Cut Out Estates negroes clothes –

25. Sent Henry down to aspen Grove to Hall 4 Heart Logs 2 for me & 2 for sawing Palings for yard & Hall plank from mill saw for me last fall, got 3 Loads 2 [m?] at aspen Grove 1 Halled up here & more at Mill besides the Palings, yesterday I went to Mr Hunts Plantation, they were fencing here & Hilling.

26 Henry got home with a Load of Por[ch] flooring soon, & they are raking here I went to aspen Grove

27 Finished Planting corn to day wed out Irish Potatoes Halled leaves out new ground to day

29 Striping Tobacco Raining all day.

1860 June 4th Mr Faris came worked about 2 Hours & went to Capt Whiteheads Milley Ann taken sick this morning

5th June Lilas Baby & Mary sick Milly Ann & Ell still sick, Mr Faris Came this morning. plowing corn in Lot. replanting Corn last we planted in Lot weeding cotton & Corn etc - Rained last evening clear this morning - Let Mr Bybee have for negroes over at Mr Hunts place 2 Galls molasses out of 5 got for them in my cask -

6th John P. Hunt started to school at Capt J Richards in Lunenburg this day My Buggy Harness Bob & Top from Catalpha,- John been at work here every day this week J P Hunt is to board at Capt Richards at $6 pr month & $1.50 pr month now for Tuition, gave Pride $1.00 & Bob $1.50 for Expense,- fine morning Wednesday - Rained in the evening & stoped Mr Faris about 4 Oclock,- & stoped plowers Daniel R Hunt came to see Mrs Hunt & Mrs Hargrave, stayed all night

7th Rained hard again last night, & this morning we are replanting Tobacco Mr Faris at work again, DR Hunt Mrs Hargrave Sal Tate & Matty staid all night John at work this morning too Mrs Hunt gets worse, last night & this morning

8th Mr Faris & Jno Clark here at work Mrs Hunt rather better this morning she gave Danl R Hunt who left this morning $10. & Gave Me her money to take care of for her say $40 Haling sand this morning Laying by fresh ground Corn. Choping out with Hoes, etc Mr Cothran spaying our shoats say 11 in all here 2 got out.

1860 June 8th Mr Cothran then went over to Mr Hunts place to spay theirs this morning clear pretty day— our negroes sick yet - claiborne complaining last night not much this morning stoping giving medicine & giving Rid-Root & Black Haw Bob Come back gone 3 days with my Buggy to Carry Pride to Capt Richards in Charlotte to school - Mrs Hargrave & Coleman to day here

9th Put up Lane fence this morning my old sow & 3 shoats missing this morning; Mrs Hunt Better several sick negroes yet; clear weather Bob gone with Mrs Hargrave home this morning Mrs Hunts Carriage & Horses

10th Bob returned I went to meeting Saturday & Sunday to day. clem Sick yet. Ell & Milly Ann Sick but we think a little better,- Mrs Hunt a great deal better to day

11 John here this morning Bob Come about 10 Oclock fair weather Found my sow with 5 Pigs Layed fresh ground & Part of Lot Corn & to day Plowing Tobacco — —

June 10th came home Sallie came from Fannies yesterday

12th bob started to Lynchg this morning with my waggon & Loose Tobacco gave him 1.50 for Toll & have some shoes put on my Horses waggon started too from Mr Hunts place

13th Rained Sent for things Bot [DuRinians] Sale & Striped Tobacco pt of day

14th I went to CHouse to have Mr Hunts Estates accr Settled. replanted Tobacco at & then weding down Rained

15 weeding & Plowing Tobacco bob got back last night.

15th June 1860. Bob gone to get Mrs Hunts Horses shod. Weeding down Tobacco I got back from CH to Dinner Mrs Hunt came from Mrs Colemans - bob gone to shop I staid at Mr Jones last night went back to CH - to day & Banks has my Rects etc to this day to settle — Bob brot for me 3 Bbls corn 3 sacks salt 1 Bbl Lime, salt from & some corn from Millers for me nails & Iron from B for Hunts est & Plow P[o]ints etc from Richmd. Card two Hhds Tobacco from Mr Hunts plantation = 16th Mrs Hunt Sallie & Alice gone to CH I went to see Betsy sick, & then to Sarah McCullock to settle acct between her & Mr J Mustain done so & then went to aspen Grove, they were cutting wheat in Lot & had cut Rye & it Rained as hard for nearly 1½ hours as ever I saw it got home about night, had to cross at Bridge by John Lewis s - some hail fell, did not do any damage,- till the Rain Plowing & weeding down Tobacco here, Rained tremendous hard & the wind Blew down a good deal of our fencing here,- & washed very much, We hope is Elvira is mending slowly rest all got out, like for rain again to night

17th Stayed at home all day Sunday

18 I went to Court settled my acct with Estate of JDHunt as Exer. - -Thined corn this morning Plowed young corn & wed it Layed by Irish Potatoes by Peach Orchard Laying Peach orchard Corn, broke fodder stack in upper Lot began to work Tobacco in evening.

1860 June 26th Finished Laying by corn next to Capt whiteheads & began to Plow Tobacco & Hilling up over there. I went to Thomas W andersons Sale. property sold only tolerable Capt Haley staid all night with us

27. June Jacob bot some Land at andersons sale amt about $1200 & odd Dollars I am going his security for that Plowing Corn in Lot lower part & then the Cotton, clear drying weather

28th waggon from Bro H. place started to Lynchg Carried a Pat of butter to sell 2 Hhd s of Tobacco, to bring back a 10 lb Coffee some wine for sacrament, some little whiskey say 2 Galls & Barrels for Cider 1 Gallon machine Oil & machine Iron Finished Plowing corn Second time & coltering in middle of the Row in upper Lot. Hilling up Cotton chopping in corn & trying all day to finish Henry & Ben commenced this morning to get Plates & Prize stump for prize Barn Engage with Mr Keen to take my machine & thrash the season, machine to be in good Order, I have ¼th that is 4 Bus. in every 100 thrashed & I gave him 1 Bushel in every 4 I get I give him one & he bears ¼th of all Damage & Expence the Season all about the machine is nothing as Starkey wantsgotas long as he has the machine Mrs Farmersthe machine but don't want to bear any expence hope to get wood A J Lewis s & Mr Davenport I wont let it go. at Mrs Smiths Plantation, James McHay John R Shields, machine to start at aspen Grove,

29th Ben here this morning & Bob, Ben & Henry get ps for prize Bob Plowing Tobacco Balance Hilling up next to whiteheads very Hot dry weather
