To the Mayor and City Council of the City of Seattle Greeting: Whereas there is now being printed and circulated in this city an certain paper known and designated as the Sunday Breeze Mercury, and also a certain other paper known and designated as the Sunday Sun: and Whereas, these papers do smirch the character of our citizens and corrupt the moral of our youth; and Whereas certain of our sister cities, deeming such publications unfit to be read by their citizens, have prohibited their circulation within the corporate limits of such cities; Therefore, we, the undrsigned, most respectfully petition your Honorable Sir and Body to take such action as will effectulally stop the publication and distribution of said papers in our own fair city. 235 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jul 21 1887 The following proceedings are had, to wit: Petitions etc Rec'd Petition of Puget Sound Improvement Company and others for a sewer in Pike Street. Read and referred to Com. on Sewers. Petition of Trustees of M E Church for permission to use streets immediately fronting their lots on the corner of Third + Marion Streets. Granted with permission to use one half of said streets. Petition of Engine Co. No. 4 for a fire alarm bell, read and referred to Committee on Fire and Water. Petition of Wm Hammond and others asking that the or-dinance prohibiting the use of cow bells within certain limits be extended to Mercer Street; read and on motion tabled. Communication from John W McGee withdrawing owners consent to sell liquor on premises known as the Inde-pendence Saloon on East side of South Second Street and occupied by John Shepich, read and referred to Committee on Revenue and License.

Report and message of the Mayor read and filed. Annual Report of City Atty, read and filed. Applications Referred. H.M. Duncan, Committee Reports Rec'd. From street committee granting petition of A Slorah + others for opening Sixth Street from Lake Street to Broad-way. From Comittee on sewers granting petition of John Kinnear and others for a sewer on Battery Street. the Committee find that the sewer now constructed is not of sufficient depth to allow the surface water to run

581 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Aug 20 1888 Ordered that the words and figures "1/2 of" oppposite Lot 1 Block N Bell's 5th Addition in Olive Stewart's assessment for stricken from the roll, and the value raised $225, as Mrs Olive J Stewart owns the whole lot. Ordered that Lot 6 Block 36 Bell and Denny's 2nd add. for stricken from the Unknown list as the property belongs to the M E Church and is exempt. Ordered that W H Hughes be reduced on Frac Lot 7 Block 56 Mrs. S A Bell's 2nd Addn from $150 to $30. Ordered that Haley and Wright be assessed $3700.00 on personald property to same having ommited from the roll by the assessor. Ordered that W C Squire be cited to appear and show cause why the assessed valuation of Lot 5 Block 3 Maynard's addn should not be raised from $1600 to $16000. F Toklas appeared before the Board and asked for a reduction of the assessment of Toklas and Singerman Referred to a committee consisting of Mr Niesz, Mr Durie and Mr Green Petitions of Geo Kinnear asking that Block 30, 31 & 32 G Kinnear's addn be stricken from the roll, laid on the table until thecommittee appointed to examine and report on the assessment of Water Front property. Ordeted that the Council adjourn as a Board of Equalization until Wednesday Aug 22 1888 at 8 o'clock PM Approved Robert Moran mayor Attest Clerk.
