701 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Oct 16 1885 be continued until the next meeting And now the Council proceeds to open the bids for furnishing the City Thirty stone monuments for government Corners, when the following bids were received to wit: Evans & Co. $2.25 each. H M Wright 75 cents each. whereupon the Contract is awarded to H M Wright and the proper contract ordered drawn A plat is presented to the Council entitled " Supplemental Plat of Blocks 44 & 58 Burkes Second Addition to the City of Seattle" by Eshelman & Llewyllen and onmotionis approved. Ordered that the Councildonow adjourn. Read and motion laid on the table. Plat of Fairview Homestead Association presented for approval by F E Sander Referred to City Surveyor. Reports Received From Judiciary Committee recommending the adoption of the Ordinance heretofore submitted entitled "An Ordinance granting the right to erect poles and stretch wires thereon for Electric purposes" provided that the parties presenting the same pay for publication of Ordinance. Adopted From same Committee approving reports of City Justice Hill Justice of the Peace Geo G Lyon and the City Jailor for month of October. Adopted and said reports ordered rec'd and filed. From the Finance Committee recommending that the sum of $13.50 be referred to P Fitzgerald on account ot erroneus valuation and taxation of Block 3 in Mercers Addition for the year 1884. Report adopted and the Clerk authorized to draw a warrant on the City fund in favor of said P Fitzgerald for said sum of $13.50 From Street committee recommending that the petition of Melody Choir et al for opening Will & Filbert Streets be granted. adopted

The following affairs are present to wit: His Honor the Mayor W H Shoudy and Councilmen C W Coulter, J Furth, Joseph Green, J.D. Hinckley, R Russell & C. F. Reitze The minutes of the previous meetings were read and approved Petitions & Communications Petition of Western Union Telegraph Company for permission to stretch its wires along the Grant Street Plank Road. Referred to the Street Committee and returned by the Committee recommending that the petition be granted provided the work was done under the direction of the Street Commissioner. adopted. Petition of Thomas & Davis et al for modification of Ordinance No. 767. so as to permit payments to be made quarterly for liquor licenses. Referred to Committee on License & Revenue. Petition of Melody Choir for the opening of Filbert Street Referred to Street Committee Petition of Sisters of Providence Hospital for renemer -ation in the sum of $218.00 for care of wounded rioters. Referred to Finance Committee. Communication from the three Assemblies of the Knights of Labor in Seattle asking that Street Commissioner L. Cummings be discharged and that Charles Brown be re-employed on the Streets for the reason that it is alleged that Street Commissioner Cummings discharged the said Brown from the Street force for political reasons. Referred to Judiciary Committee.

From committee on License & Revenue rejecting petition of J W Hall for the return of certain license money. Adopted. From Committee in Fire & Water as follows: Your Comittee to whom was referred certain matters pertaining to the Fire Department recommend: That the Ordinance relating to the election of Chief and other officers of the Fire Department be changed so that the election of Chief shall be by the Common Council: The election of his assistants shall be by the Council upon the recommendation of the chief. that the electionog Chief Engineer shall be by the Common Council and the Election of Engineers in charge of Engines shall be by the Council upon the recommendation of the chief.
