My dear:

When I saw Jack, Sunday, he was wearing one of his dress shirts which they have to wear to dinner & on Sundays, but I had forgotten to get the links etc. & the mother had gotten a link here & and there so he had two different kinds. And for a stick pin, she had put in a lady's

[left page] fancy headed pin and, for a tie clamp, had fastened the tie down with an ordinary pin. So Monday, I got him a set links, pin & clamp and put in a metal-backed knife, (which no one will take away from him.)

I could see his eyes shine when he opened the box. Could you imagine them shine as they [right page] did six yrs. ago? Well, they are like that now, most all the time.

I had hoped he would write me today or yesterday that he had them, but he has not written a word so far. They won't let a letter go out unless it is in just the proper shape, they tell me. As soon as he writes, will send it.

They have a dance next wk. and all the boys have pumps for that & dress shoes for dinner, but I think his dress shoes

will do. His chum Edwin is a "Stanford" boy so Jack says he is for Stanford too not U of C.

Edwin is the son of a wealthy lumber dealer in the city. His sister had a birthday party last wk. & Jack wanted to give her one of his new hdkfs, but the mother fixed it up so his feelings were not hurt. It was all he had to offer.

If you can find what other military brush, wish you would send it as his is just worn out & he needs a good one.
