265 — 1890 — — Aug. 4 — — Jaffrey, N.H. — Very hot, cloudy, windy. Read most of the day Century Mag., Garden & Forest &c. Changed & dried blotters. Copied off the Rhododendron Art. Habenaria tridentata, Hook. Woods back of the house ————— Aug. 5 — 1890. Jaffrey, N.H. Rather warm, but breezy and pleasant. This A.M. Elina & I took a walk to the P.O. and then round to Kellers Hill be the road past the church. We went to Thorndike Pond, which is a beautiful sheet of water. Home to dinner by the Spaulding road, some 5 m. in all. In the P.M. read Higginson's U.S. Hist. to M. in the grove. To the P.O. in the evening. Juncus canadensis, J. Gay, var. coarctatus, Engelm. Damp soil. Roadside. ————— — Aug. 6 — 1890. Jaffrey, N.H. Heavy rainstorm this A.M. at 7 o'clock. Cleared soon, and it has been a fine day. This A.M. Elinor & I walked round Gilmore Pond. It must be 5 m. Fine views. Cardinal flower out. Home to dinner. This P.M. changed & dried blotters. Read History to M. Epilobium angustifolium, L. Waste ground. ————— Aug. 7 — Jaffrey, N.H. Glorious day. Cloudy with sun and cool. This A.M. a party of us walked 2 m. up the Dublin road. This P.M. a party of us drove to Peterboro. We went by the upper road & came back by the River. The bank were fringed with Cardinal Flower. To the P.O. in the evening. Danthonia compressa, Aust. Roadside about "Ark" Abundant. Habenaria lacera, R.Br. By brook —

266 — 1890 — — Aug. 8 — Jaffrey, N.H. Beautiful day. Cloudy. Shirley Miss Boyd took my photo this A.M. in my botanical regimentals. I walked to the P.O. with Mrs. L. after having been in the pasture with Einor & Miss Boyd to get thistles for balls. This P.M. charged blotters, read & went to the brook with Elinor for Cardinal Flowers. Lobelia cardinalis, L. Brook — ————— Aug. 9 — Jaffrey, N.H. Raining in the A.M. Cloudy in the P.M. This A.M. Elinor & I went to Slab City, to the brook for Pickerel Weed. Picked blackberries on the way. It rained considerably. Fixed labels with plants and read aloud in the P.M. Wrote to Mr. Bebb this evening. Pontederia cordata, L. Brook Hypericum canadense, L. Pasture & roadside ————— Aug. 10 — Jaffrey, N.H. Cloudy & sunny, cool. This A.M. warmed blotters & changed them. Walked some with Randolph. In the P.M. talked with Elinor under the pines. Solidago juncea, Ait. Roadside. The fields & roadsides are brilliant with it. Verbena hastata, L. Roadside —————

267 — 1890 — — Aug. 11 — Jaffrey, N.H. Glorious day - cool - rained a little in the P.M. This A.M. Elinor & I walked through the woods back of the "Annex" to the bog. Walked along the edge some ways botanizing, then went up to the higher ground among the trees where we sat down. Home to dinner. This P.M. put plants in press. Went up to drive with Dr. Wesselhoeft and a party. Glorious sky views, brilliant clouds gorgeous sunset on the Mt. beautifully tinted. I neer saw saw such magnificent effects. Want straight past Mrs. A.D. Pierce's, up the Dublin Road to the Peterborough Road and round to E. Jaffrey and home. Went to the P.O. after supper. A photo of C.C. Parry came from Davenport, Ia. Calla palustris, L. } {Bog} Two late-flowering specimens Habenaria tridentata, Hook. } Bog — Pinus strobus, L. } Woods — Spiranthes gracilis, Bigelow } {Woods} ————— Aug. 12 — Jaffrey, N.H. Rain before breakfast. Glorious day, cool, cloudy. This A.M. C. Kettell to a group of the Misses Clapp, Mrs. Lambert, Elinor, M. & I, in a field off the Fitzgerald Road. Then Miss L & B. Clapp, Elinor & I walked to the Camp. Mrs. W. Wesselhoeft escorted us half way to the pond in the woods, a mile from the Camp. A nice path had been made. We found a small piece of water, muddy but prettily set in the woods. I saw some magnificent beeches on the way. Home to dinner. This P.M. Elinor & I went over my plants taking out what ever dry &c. Read aloud to M. Read the Aug Amer. Garden. Polygala sanguinea, L. Field. Very abundant.

268 — 1890 — — Aug. 13 — — Jaffrey, N.H. — Beautiful day. This A.M. a party of us walked to the Ark and went through the woods to "Blue City" and back and then by another path in the woods, home again. Changed blotters with Elinor in the P.M. Read aloud. Walked nearly to the Ark with E. Moneses uniflora grandiflora, Salisb. Fruit. Woods — ————— — Aug. 14 — Jaffrey, N.H. Beautiful A.. Thunder storm in the P.M. This A.M. Miss Kitty Thompson, Elinore & I waded over to the bog east of the house. I waded about considerably in it. We found two small lizards, one brown, the other bright vermillion. I shall try to take them home. Changed blotters. Read some Bellum Civile. To the P.O. after supper. Solidago juncea, Ait. Field — Calla palustris, L. Bog Leaves — Aug. 15 — 1890. Jaffrey N.H. Beautiful day. We are to have a party on Sat. evening, the 16th to-morrow and I have spent the day getting boughs & & plants. This A.M. Randolph & I went to the wood and cut a large pile of pine & spruce. Boughs & got 2 bushel baskets full of Lycopodium complanatum. This P.M. Shirley, Randolph & I drove to a large pasture, a little beyond the Ark which is literally overrun with Solidago juncea. We picked an enormous

269 — 1890 — lot of it and tipped it all over in getting it over the stone wall, right into a hornets' nest! Whew! How we scattered! Hornets quieted down and we quietly removed the Golden Rod without a sting. I saw a large brown snake swallow a frog in the pasture. It was most interesting. The decorations are profuse — ————— — Aug. 16 — Jaffrey, N.H. — Beautiful day. Worked hard all day getting ferns (Dicksonia, Aspidium Noveboracense & Osmunda claytonii) Cardinal Flower & Golden Rod {Solidago} juncea and moss. The centre piece for the dining room was fine, a mass of Cardinal Flower in a bucket which was entirely hidden by a bed of moss. Swinging hammocks were filled with Golden Rod & ferns and ferns adorned the tops of doors & windows. The party was a great success. Rooms crowded, merry games were played and we got to our rooms by 11 o'clock. ————— — Aug. 17 — Jaffrey, N.H. — Foggy A.M. clearing later, warm windy. Very heavy thunder storm this P.M. Don't feel quite right to-day. Read this A.M. This P.M. Elinor helped me making a list of plants from Drake & Dicksons List of Portland, Oregon — Thunder storm this evening —
