275 — 1890 — — Sept. 5 — — Jaffrey, N.H. — Foggy most the day. Rather warm. This A.M. Margie, Elinor, Kitty & I walked over to Mrs. A.D. Pierce's, over the hill by the Central House. Returned to dinner. In the P.M. Herbert Young introduced by Dr [Winn?], called. Then I read aloud to Margie. Elinor & I changed blotters before tea. Read in the evening to Margie & Elinor "A Yankee in Andersonville." Epilobium coloratum. Roadside. Wet ground ——— Sept 6 Jaffrey N.H. Rainy day. This AM. Elinor, Kitty & I went to the P.O. Rained hard coming back. Read aloud to Margie in the P.M. "Looking Backward." Mrs Lambert has been quite sick and before supper I drove down to E. Jaffrey for the Doctor. Dr. Wesselhoeft called in on his way. Talked with Elinor most of the evening in my room. Margie was up stairs with Mrs. L. who is better. Have received a long letter from Ed Braman from Lucerne. — ——— Sept. 7 — Jaffrey, N.H. Cloudy & clear. Rather warm. This AM Margie & I walked to Slab City and by the left fork to Gilmore Pond. Beautiful views. Home to dinner. Distance a good 4 m. This P.M. dried a lot of blotters. Elinor & I then changed blotters and then walked on the Pine walk, taking the Kellar Road first. 276 — 1890 — — Sept. 8 — — Jaffrey N.H. — A glorious day, though warm. This A.M. I went to the P.O. in 8 1/2 m. and back in 9 1/2 m. Then Elinor & I went up the Kellar Road and, in the woods on the way to the Pine Walk, got a basketful of fine plants of Aspidium acrostichoides for Mrs. Lambert. Came home through the Pine Woods. Changed blotters in the PM with Elinor and later in the afternoon Elinor & I walked to Slab City. We traced out a beautiful walk in the Pines near by. Home to supper. In my room this evening. Finished, to-day, the last 8 pp. of Caesar's Bellum Civile. Elinor sundried by blotters this A.M. ————— — Sept. 9 — Jaffrey, N.H. — A threatening A.M. Racing P.M. Staid about the house this A.M. doing one thing & another. Mr & Mrs. Lambert, Elinor & Mrs Westcott left by coach for the 3 o'clock train. What a gap that makes! But then, we follow next week on the 18th. Read all the P.M. to Margie 150 pp. in "Looking Backward." Another letter from Mr. Morong from Buenos Aires. He sals for Chile Aug. 6 or 12. ————— Sept. 10 — Jaffrey N.H. A dull rainy day. Rain held up this P.M. but the air was saturated nearly to the dewpoint. This AM. & part of the PM. read & finished to Margie "Looking Backward." Finished it (330 pp) in 3 readings. Then M. & I walked nearly to Blue City some 1 1/2 m. I took a few Asters. Played 3 games of cribbage with Miss Kitty this AM. Open fire in our room to-day. This evening read "Meesons Will" to M. Aster diffusus Ait. Roadside & Brookside — {Aster} vimiveus Lam. {Roadside}

277 — 1890 — — Sept 11 — — Jaffrey, N.H. — A cloudy day without rain. This A.M. Mr. Young came over from the Proctor House and enjoyed a room here. Miss Kitty & I walked to Blue City & the cascade on Mead's Brook. Mr. Y. accompanied us on his way to the Proctor as far as the Brook. We then walked on as far as Dr. Proctor's House. The Dr. saw us and entertained us for a long time, taking us through wood paths and down to the Brook and showing us his house, and giving us milk, crackers and blueberries. He was very entertaining and told me many of his War experiences. We got home to dinner. This P.M. I have read "Meeson's Will" to M. Wrote to Elinore this evening — Anaphalis margaritacea, B. & H. ♂ {male} fl. Pasture — ————— — Sept. 12 — 1890 — Jaffrey, N.H. — Rain, rain, rain. This A.M. I walked up to the P.O. with Miss Kitty, then I changed the blotters of my plants and took many out, then finished to M. "Meeson's Will" 240 pp. in 3 readings. This P.M. looked over some plants sent me by G.S. Miller from No. Truro. Then as the rain held up a little M. & I walked to the P.O. Aster undulatus, L. — Roadside. Cornus sericea, L. Fruit. Same bush as last July 15 sps. ————— — Sept. 13 — Jaffrey N.H. — Rain all day. This A.M. I read to M. "Critical Period of {American History}" & this PM. I finished 3 {chapters}. Worked on my plants some. Copied two Charts of {English History} this P.M. & evening. —————

278 — 1890 — — Sept. 14 — — Jaffrey, N.H. — Cloudy, rather cool. Rain between 7 & 8 P.M. This A.M. M. & I walked to Mrs. Pierce's. Had a pleasant talk with William. Home to dinner. This P.M. I warmed some blotters in the kitchen stove and put my plants into them. I have been unable to sun dry my blotters since the 8th. It is discouraging. have thrown away one Aster that quite lost its color My Calla spathes have turned brown. They have been in pres since Aug. 11. Read 20 pp. in "Critical Period" to M. Malva moschata, L. Roadside — escape — ————— — Sept. 15 — Jaffrey N.H. — Rain! rain! Heavy rain last night and to-day it has rained with intervals of let up though the air has been saturated. This A.M. I copied a chart of {English History} and then with my umbrella & box walked up the Mt. road past 2nd brook and got fruit of Steironema ciliata {ciliatum}. This P.M. wrote some letters and then walked as far as the 2nd Brook above the Ark. All the brooks are overflowing and beautiful. It was wet enough to rain though it didn't. I had a pleasant letter from Elinor to-day. Answered it this evening. Steironema ciliatum, Raf. Fruit. Roadside. Same place as Aug. 1. Scutellaria lateriflora, L. Fr. By brook. Elodes campanulata Pursh. Fr. {By brook} ————— Sept. 16 — Jaffrey, N.H. Cloudy & threatening but not rainy. This A.M. went to the brook for the Habenarias, I have left fruitng all summer. Then got a basket and filled it with Mitchella by the brook to take home. In the P.M. drove to Fitzwilliam with Mrs. Jay & daughters. A fox jumped on to the wall on the road close by us, and down almost into the street. He retreated very quickly. I had a good sight of him. — Habenaria orbiculata, Torr. } Rich woods — {Habenaria} fimbriata, R.Br. } {Rich woods} Oakesia sessilfolia , Watson Shaded Roadside.

279 — 1890 — — Sept. 17 — Jaffrey, N.H. Rain, rain, rain! The morning opened with rain and mist. We did some packing. In the middle of the morning, the sun made a few glimpses and Miss Boyd took a photo of Margie. Then I started off to get some Aspidium acrostichoides for Margie up the Kellar Road where I got it Sept. 8th. Met Mr Poole and has a long talk with him about the war &c. He was with Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. Meanwhile the rain began. I was entirely unprotected and got soaking. Still I got the ferns. Margie met me on the return at the school-house with umbrella & coat. I had to make an entire change of clothing. This P.M. We have been packing for we return to-morrow. ————— Sept. 18 — Cambridge, Mass Glorious day. Left Jaffrey in the 3.02 train. This A.M. Mr. Young & I drove round Thorndike Pond through the Fontainbleau Woods and up on to Woodbury Hill. Our friends gave us a hearty send of. Changed at Waltham and reached Cambridge on time. Home before 7 P.M. Hearty welcome. Tea at Mrs. Coolidge's Went to Mother's & Lucy's. Lygate called with Harry Richardson & Glidden — ————— Sept. 19 Cambridge Mass Clear warm day. Called Mrs Lambert this AM. Saw her & Elinor. Worked on my plants a good deal. Potted fern & Mitchella.
