Dear Children

I have now to announce to you the death of your Grandfather Read who Breathed his last at one oclock this afternoon--he has been very gradually failing during the last two weeks-and for the last three or four days was so far gone as to notice very little of what what was passing--he had a very singular dificulty in his breathing for about ten days he would breath very loud & hard for 1/2 a minute then remain entirely still without breathing at all for the same space of time--he continued in the same way untill last night when he commenced breathing all the while but in a very laborious manner--we think he has passed away without undergoing a very great portion of pain for notwithstanding his breathing was apar rantly hard yet he did not complain of its being so--but everything has seemed to be comfortale in his mind & all done right by every one who had any thing to do about taking care of him Aunt Avis Donnalds is now here

Hamilton April, 14. 1838

[In pencil] to Susan F. Brown

Dear Friend

The arrival of the Post Boy a few moments since, was announce, and what was my surprise on beholding a letter for S. B. Anthony endorsed in an unknown hand writing, but when I beheld the signature of S.^F. Brown, I was still more, and most agreeably surprised. What could give me more pleasure, than to know that she with whom so many happy moments, of gone by days, have been spent, still holds them in remembrance; Those days, dear S.... will ever be cherished in this mind; and a renewal, of them now in our maturer years, would be as pleasing to me, as you expressed in your letter, they would be to you.

But, Susan, your letter, instead of finding me at home, enjoying all the pleasures connected with it, found me situated three hundred miles from that beloved spot; separated from all that is dear to me, excepting my elder Sister, at Deborah Moulsons Boarding School, a short distance west of the City of Philadelphia.

Guelma has been at school at school about six months and I three. We think of returning to our loved home in the second week of April, which is will be the week of Phila. Yearly Meeting, at which time we anticipate the arrival of our Father in Hamilton, to accompany us to our dear native land. Think you the time will arrive too soon, be assured not; every day is counted as bringing it nearer and nearer; but I hope these thoughts will not be sufficient to abstract my mind from the employments of the day; for by so doing, I should ^deprive myself of the advancement, which I might otherwise make in Literary pursuits.
