department, and a weekly return would be inconsistant with the true interest & duty required) shall be charged therewith at a fair price for new articles, & retained from his wages, in case there is an amount equal thereto, or the supervisor may at his option send for & reclaim such article or articles, & charge such defaulting employee with the expense of such reclamation & deduct such chargest from his wages. A continued disregard of this order for return, must be reported to me & will be cause of removal from service.

The supervisor will also see that the chiefs of the several tribes shall not be required to work in the pub lic fields, but that they be required to furnish from their several tribes the number of able bodied hands assessed to their tribes severally, & to superintend the working of their several indians under the white overseer, in charge of the district. Whilst in such duty, issues shall be made to him for subsistance the same as to the laborers

The indians employed in the public works shall be entitled to meat, wheat, &c for their, sub sistance whilst so employed

All able bodied indians & squaws not employed on the public farm, or necessarily in care of the sick & infirm, must be required assiduously to employ themselves in gathering acorns, curing & securing the same for their subsistance during the idle season. The field hands as soon as the public harvest is completed must be employed in the same way until an abundant supply is provided.

Whilst gathering acorns the supervisor will issue meat to those actually employed, twice a week, to the amount of one days subsistance each, also wheat once a week. And during the idle season, meat & wheat shall be issued but once a week, on Saturday evenings sufficient for their Sunday subsistance.

The sick, aged, & infirm, shall be entitled to issues as required in their correct medical treatment, and the supervisor is required to be vigilant in seeing that such issues are properly applied.

Reservation from visiting the indian encampments, except with him or his employees, and to be particularly cautious to prevent any further inter fering with indians, seducing squaws from the reservation, or kidnapping children, and to secure sufficient protection to all indians; squaws or indian children who shall seek the protection of the reservation, and submit themselves to its jurisdiction & discipline, but in no case to shield the guilty from the proper jurisdiction of the regularly constituted civil authorities.

For all necessary aid to the complete enforcement of this order the Supervisor will apply in writing as the military commandant at Fort Wright.

The supervisor & all employed, are strictly inhibited from giving away indian children, or assigning any indians, squaws, or children to service to any one ex cept in the service of the reservation

In view of the late usurpation of control of this reservation by Capt Chas. D. Douglas commanding at Fort Wright & his suppressing the then supervisor and the appointment of Mr James Short to his place. I hereby order & proclaim, that the military have no control over this reservation, except in aid of the regular authorities of the indian department, upon proper requisition, and that hereafter no order or orders touching the administration of this depart ment, issued by the military authorities of Fort Wright except in aid as aforesaid, shall be heeded or obeyed by the supervisor, or those employed on the reservation, but that each and every of them shall be subject only to his superior in this department, and should anything of like nature again occur the supervisor will forthwith report to me, and in the meantime make every effort in his power to the correct administration of his duties as supervisor. On Sundays until further provided it would be well for the Supervisor to visit each tribe & calling all together, through an interpreter give them a moral lecture, short, & concise, but in no case make them any promises of rewards, but let the lecture be upon cause & effect. - This is only advisory

The employees are 1st one who shall be termed head farmer whose duty it is to see that the fences are kept in prop er repair, that the tools are kept in order, that the proper selection of soil is made for each crop that is cultivated, that the land is properly prepared to receive the seed, &, the seed properly & seasonably put in, & to superintend the overseers of the several fields, that a uniform & judicious plan may be established, & carried out in the farming department on the reserve. It will be his duty like-wise to give notice the night beforehand, to the several chiefs, of the number, & kinds of hands required of each and the place they may be required, on the following morning, as assigned by the supervisor, being careful for the present to work but one tribe in any one field

The head farmer will reside upon the reservation with his family & be entitled to two household servants, and in his family it will be expected such of the employees shall baord as are not provided with a separate residence.

The family will be supplied by regularly weekly issues of subsistance answering, to their proper numbers from the public stores, on hand according to army regulations.

The head farmer will have complete control of his department subject to the supervisor, and the duty at present will be performed by Mr Nathaniel King There shall be such other ^[illegible] employees as the service permits and as shall be required as overseers of the indians, and to each shall be assigned a separate dis trict & tribe or tribes. In all cases when the employees keep house they shall be entitled to one indian & his wife as house hold servants. The indians & squaws so employed by the overseers & head farmer shall be entitled to the same pay for actual service rendered as those emplopyed in the supervisors family.

To one employee shall be assigned the duty of issuing grain, meat, under the order of the supervisor and it shall also be his duty to superintend the culture of a good vegetable garden for the use of the various families in the employment of the government on the reservation

and also in the culture of all kinds of seeds re quired on the reserve. For this purpose he shall have assigned him two indians & their squaws, whom he shall instruct & superintend in their duty & who shall be exempt from other service, except gathering acorns in idle times. These gardeners (indians) shall be entitled to meat & grain issues the same as field hands, and in case their time should be so fully occupied that they cannot gather acorns other allowance shall be made as necessity requires

There shall for the present be two female teachers employed at the yearly compensation of two hundred dollars whose duty it shall be to teach the squaws the correct art of housekeeping, the art of cutting & manufacturing clotting & when practicable teach them to read.

These orders & regulations subject to revision & amendment at any time by me or my supervisors in office.

The supervisor when circumstances will permit will report informally once each month, of the state of affairs & at the close of each quarter commen cing with 30th Sept ult. report officially of all matters under his jurisdiction.
