I am just in receipt of a letter from Hon. C. [Name?] who informs me that you [showed?] him copy of a letter to my successor Mr Steele in which [illegible?] Mr Steele was instructed to carry [illegible?] all my [contract?] on [illegible?] on possible [illegible?] this as entirely [illegible?] & as it should be [illegible?] Mr Steele refuses to pay. [Illegible?] for the cattle, which you see he has [accepted?] for and acknowledges 77 head of them had been killed & issued to Indians up to Nov. & by this time [illegible?] one half the whole [illegible?] been delivered has been used up.
Mr Steele goes beyond his instructions & says insultingly & falsely to me, "I should let [Name?] voucher [illegible?] to my credit as it is all within my family" & [illegible?] is false [Name?] is not within my family nor never was, even if he was [illegible?] [illegible?] [illegible?] &

furnished supplies cheaper than any other person would do it, should be therefore loose his money. Mr. Steele took a horse from here belonging to my son, which I had been using in the service several months in lieu of one of the Govmet Horses that I [illegible?]. He says "Others who [illegible?] says he belongs to the U.S" which is not true. He also blames me for not sending the [illegible?] to the Reservation when it was utterly impossible for him to travel with 3 legs 5 miles or even 3 miles per day. I obeyed your orders & had him [illegible?] in Long Valley at auction for $80. $20 less that the [illegible?] to [illegible?] him. [Illegible?] [illegible?] totally worthless I am told.
He also charges me with "scattering the govmt property_ this is also false. I have carefully gathered & [illegible?] all I could from the beginning & he has not found an item of govmt property off the reservation except office furniture & the horse & buggy he took from the place which

I kept for the convenience a while here to visit the Indian troubles in Butte Co.
The check held by Hamblin & others I wish to [illegible?] and cannot do so until they are paid off. Mr Steele holds the many [approprists?] for that purpose & reuses to pay it as instructed. Hamblin was to be paid down & others took those checks in lein of cash & expected them to be honored with the money be now [illegible?] & passed me their vouchers which want to my [illegible?] you can see from the a/c [illegible?] last sent & the a/c of disbursement this fact and that I am [illegible?] as changes by Mr. Steele. Mr Steele has been notified that the Indian goods have been [returned?] & are ready to be turned over to him but no reply as yet. I hope you will renew instruction to him to pay before I am sued on the [illegible?] on those check. I want nothing to stand to my [illegible?] there which is not right & property belongs to others.
