Sir:

I have to submit the following requisition for funds to [display?] the expenses of the Indian service in the district [illegible] for the 1st of [illegible] of 1864.

In submitting the above requisition for the Indians of the appropriation for fiscal years 1863, I cannot too strongly [illegible] the importance of an immediate remittance of the amounts asked for. The account

and continued trouble among the Indians in the valley of [illegible]; their removal to the [illegible]; their consumption of all the subsistence upon that Reserve; their nondestitute conditions, the approach of winter, and the impossibility of attaining supplies upon credit, plainly indicatethe propriety of prompt action by the department in furnishing means to meet this [illegible]. Again, unless speedy relief comes in the shape of funds, it will be almost impossible to transport supplies to the Reserve, after the Winter rains fairly set in, as the roads are then nearly, if not quite impassable. In my judgement of the amount asked for was [illegible], it would then fall short of meeting the requirements of the services in preventing suffering among the Indians of this district, during the coming months. It is, I presume, hardly necessary for me to add that in the [diffusement?] of the funds asked for, I shall, as [illegible], be governed by the strictest economy and [illegible], [illegible] the resources place at my disposal, in the spirit of the requirements often expressed

to me by this department.
