Sir-

I am just in receipt of a letter from Acting Com Chas [Charles] E. Mix, of 5th May in answer to my letter of 22nd Feby [February] last in which I am informed that "the explanation given at that [office?] in [reference?] to the turning over Government property by late Agent Hanson to me are not sufficiently [illegible?] to warrant a settlement of my claim [illegible mark?] and requests that I should furnish a statement showing the amount of goods received from Agent Hanson, the kind of goods, the amount disposed of, and the amount returned to him. I have drawn off and herein enclose to you a settlement as requested. Mr. Hanson turned over the goods to me at the invoice prices which he gave me but what I disposed of did not bring near cost, goods were lower here than in N. York, and the quality was very inferior in most instances. The total received by me as per Statement forwarded is $6727.62 Amount disposed of by me [illegible writing above me?] 1776.39 And I returned the value of $4951.23 to Hanson, as soon as he showed me the copy of your letter to Mr. Steele with instructions to pay me, Mr. Hanson then took the goods to Sacramento City and as he informed me turned them all over to

his successor except what he was compelled to sell to pay the charges for freight &c in returning them [illegible?] Allow me to say that I paid $20 in [illegible?] [illegible?] for [thread?] & buttons which I took no bill of & which Hanson says he turned over to Mr. Steele along with the other goods.

I have [illegible?] that in the statement also. Hoping that this will be satisfactory & that the money I should have had nearly two years ago will not be unnecessarily withheld two years longer.
