Yuba City Cal. June 23rd 1865

Hon Wm [William] P. Dole Commr Dear Sir

It has now been nearly two years since I was [superceded?], have been refused the privilege of [illegible?] to Washington to make settlement, and about three months since all the last [acception?] to my a/c, have been explained to Agent Browne, and which he informs me he reported to your office immediately, and up to this day I have had no reply whether the settlement has yet been made, or whether there is still something else necessary before the matter can be closed up.

I cannot but believe, that you are disposed to make a final disposition of the matter as soon and on as liberal terms as possible but if you were aware of the great trouble loss and anxiety that this long delay has given me, I feel sure you would pardon my seeming impatience - and if the settlement has to be still longer delayed, I hope you will allow me to go hence at once, and close up the whole affair - as the immence [immense] distance from Cal. to Washington requires great time
