Sir:

I have to acknowledge the recipt of
your letter of the 19 instant (of December) enclosing copy of
communication from Charles Maltby, [illegible] of
Indian Affairs for California relating among
other things to the inadequacy of the aprropriation
for the pay of physicians in that state.
Copies of these communications have been transmitted
to the committees on Indian Affairs,
of both houses of Congress, and their attention
called to the matter.
