Dear Sir

I am in receipt of your first telegram with [Hon?] John [Name?] of date 14th [illegible] [illegible] which I found in my office on my return from Round Valley Reservation [illegible] 3rf [illegible], my Clerk Mr Hoffman having immediately on the receipt of the same forwarded a copy to Round Valley which failed to [reach?] me there before my [illegible]. I answer to day by [telegraph?]

Soon after my return from Washington I [received?] from a large [number?] of the [citizens?] of San Francisco reccomendations "both written and verbal" requesting me to retain and appoint H. [A?]. W. Hoffman Clerk in my office.

This general expression of the wishes of the citizens, as well as their reccomendations of his integrity, and qualifications, and his acquaintance with Indian Affairs in this State "having been appointed by Late Supt [Wentworth?] and has been continued in office [illegible?] [illegible?] [form?] years," I felt was [illegible?] to great [illegible].

I regarded it as my interest as well as the interest of the Indian Service to retain Mr Hoffman and [accordingly?] I [appointed?] him my Clerk on [entering?] [illegible] the duties of my office,
