The following is a journal of the transactions of the Philomathesian Society.

[centered] Wednesday, Nov. 30th A.D. 1803.

The Society was opened. Absentees, see page 1st. Mr. Hall was excused from the debate. The composuists [sic] were absent & no composition read.

On motion of Mr. McWhorter the discussion of the question for this evening was postponed to the next evening.

Messrs. Huggins & Manly, Composuists [sic], for next evening.

Messrs. Martindale, Slade, Bell, & Huggins } Disputants, for next evening.

Mr. Bingham having come in, on motion of Mr. Smith, he [sic] was requested to read, which he did.

The Judicial Committee made report. The journal of last evening was red [sic]. Messrs. Smith, Hall, Martindale, & Conkling were, on motion of Mr. Huggins, referred to the Judicial Committee, for disturbances [disturbances] on the last evening.

Mr. McWhorter was appointed on the Jud. Com. vice Mr. Eddy, who is absent.

[centered] Wednesday, 7th Decr - 1803.

The Society was opened, & Mr. Barney appointed to the chair, the President being absent. Absentees, see p. 1. The journals of last evening [evening] was [sic] read. The Jud. Com. asked leave to postpone making report [report], which was granted. Mr. Huggins read composition - Mr Manly [Manly} was out of town. The Question for this evening's discussion, as agreed to last evening, is, "Do men act more from habit than reflection?"

The disputants having presented their questions, proceeded on the debate of the question postponed at the last evening; and the question was decided in the affirmative.

Mr. Bell, one of the disputants for this evening, was out of town.

Mr. Slade was excused from the debate - And Mr. Martindale [Martindale] was precluded. Mr. Huggins having presented a question, proceeded on the debate. On a discussion of the question by the members [members] present, it was decided in the Affirmative.

Composuists [sic] for next evening, McWhorter & Bingham. Disputants for ds. McWhorter, Bingham, Hall, & Conkling.

[centered] Wednesday, 14th. Dec. 1803.

The society was opened, the members called, & the journal of last evening read. Absentees, see P. 1. Messrs. M. Cook, & T. D. Huggins were appointed pro tem. vice Messrs. Manly and McWhorter, of the Judicial Committee. The Judicial Committee made report in the cases of the absentees last presented. Mr. Bingham only red [sic] composition - McWhorter being absent.

The disputants having presented their questions were permitted to proceed on the debate of the question, "Aught schools to be supported by a pubic [sic] tax." But Mr. Conkling not having written on the question, was precluded from the debate; and, on Motion of Mr. M. Cook, he was excused.

[centered] The question being put, was decided in the affirmative. [centered] Composuists [sic] for next evening, Messrs. M. Cook, & Huggins. [centered] Disputants for do. Messrs. Cook, Huggins Bingham, & Gove. [centered] Qestion [sic]. Is a lie ever justifiable?

[centered] Wednesday, 21st. Dec. 1803.

The society opened, the members called &c. Absentees see P. 1. Messrs. Cook, & Huggins read composition, according to appointment. The disputants having presented questions, proceeded on the debate of the question: "Is a lie ever justifiable?" which was decided in the affirmative.

On motion of Mr. Huggins, for a reconsideration of the question, the motion was lost.

Mr. M. Cook, according to appointment, rad [sic] a dissertation before the society.

Mr. Martindale motioned for leave to withdraw from the Society, which was refused, on account of a fine standing against him.

Mr. Bingham was appointed to read a dissertation before the society next term.

The Election of Officers for the ensuing term will be the business of the next evening.

The society being opened, the journal read, & members called, the election was proceeded upon. Absentees see P.1. The Jud. Com. made report, on presentments for the two last evenings.

The following gentlemen were elected officers for the term ensuing:

Milo Cook, President, Amos Bingham, vice president, Jesse Gove, Scribe, Solomon G. Conkling, Librarian, Wm Slade, jun, Treasurer,

David McWhorter, Th. E. Hale, Th. D. Hugins [sic] } Presidential Committee, &

Joseph D. Learned, vice Amos Bingham, one of the Judicial Com.

[centered] Adjourned, Att. Jesse Gove, Scribe pro tem.

[centered] Wednesday, 28th Dec. 1803.

A special meeting was called, and the members called. Absentees, see P.1.

On motion of Mr. Huggins, the Society went into the consideration of the case of Gustavus Vs Willard, a member of this Society, for infractions of the 11th. section of the Constitution; Whereupon, on motion of Mr. Gove, it was referred to the Judicial Committee, to make enquiry into the matter, & make report forthwith: And the said Committee made the follo^wing report, (viz.) "The Judicial Committee, in the case of Gustavus V. Willard, which was referred to them by the Society's Report; That, the said Willard, having been degraded from his Class, on account of his not having attended to his studies, as a student ought; having had a specified time given him, in which he might, by attention to his studies, have regained his former standing; And, having still neglected to attend to the exercises of College, has, in our opinion, become a "nuisance" to the College, & a "disgrace" to the society, & aught to be expelled from it.

And, the said report was accepted by the society. Upon which, the following resolution was passed:

Resolved, that Gustavus V. Willard, a dishonable member of this society be expelled therupon; and that the Scribe be directed to give him a copy of this resolution. A copy of the above has been made and delivered, according to the above resolution.

The society adjourned till Saturday next, at two o'clock, P. M. Attest Jesse Gove, Scribe protem.

Saturday, 31st. Dec. 1803.

The society was opened pursuant to adjournment, the journals read & members called - Absentees, see P. I. the judicid committee made report. The Treasurer made report to the society on the state of the Treasury which was as follows:

"Statement Of the expenditures & revenue of the Philomathesian Society, during the service of A. Bingham, as treasurer pro tempore.

Expended by order of the Society, for a blank book $3.00.
do. for a trunk . . . 2.75.
Money rec.d into the Treasury . . . $7.91.
do. remaining in the Treasury . . . 1.95.
Money due the Treasury from the members 16.42.
This is a true statement, Attest, A. Bingham, Treasurer, protem."

Mr. Barney signified to the society, his desire of being dismissed; and, on motion of Mr. Conklings, it was ordered, that Mr. Barney be honorably dismissed. -
