August 30th 1859. Middle wind ENE. Fine breezes. Latter part fresh breezes ENE. No western set yet. Observed tide rips through this day.

August 31 First part wind ENE passing clouds. Middle ENE. Latter part light airs & squally from E. to South. Light showers of rain. Verry [VERY] heavy tide rips breaking & whirling. Equal to Nantuckett Shoals or South Channell [CHANNEL]. No pierceptable [PERCEPTIBLE] current. No difference in tempreture [TEMPERATURE]. Barometer low. I do not expect to see it up untill [UNTIL] past [PASSED] the Equa [EQUATORIAL] calms.

September 1st First part fresh breezes & heavy squalls from SW. Middle SSW fresh & heavy squalls. Latter part fresh breezes SSW and passing clouds. Verry [VERY] heavy SSW sea. Heavy tide rips appearing like breakers. If any current it is to the Eastward. The weather is so squally the course & distance is [ARE] imperfect.

September 2d First part fresh breezes from SSW & passing clouds. Middle fresh SSW. Latter part SSW. Fine breezes passing clouds. Have experienced 36 miles Easterly current this 24 hours. Am getting far enough to the Eastward. Shall expect the SE. trades soon. Am surprised at haveing [HAVING] a [AN] Easterly current. Never experienced it before.

September 3th First part fine breezes from SSW. Passing clouds. Middle & latter part SSE. Moderate & passing clouds. Experienced 30 miles Easterly current. Barometer steady. Hope to se [SEE] it rise the next 24 hours.

September 4th First part wind SSW morderate [MODERATE]. Middle calm. Latter part SSW. Morderate [MODERATE] current last 24 miles. Heavy old swell from South. No appearance of a change.

September 5th first part moderate wind SSW. Middle fresh breeze from South & squally. Latter part fresh SSW & squally. Stood 4 hours to the west current 24 miles ENE. No prospect of a change. I am about discouraged. I cannot make western without Northern. & going to the Eastward. Mine is a hard chance.

September 6th First part wind S.S.W. & South. Middle SSW. Latter part SW by S. SSW. Light squalls 24 miles Easterly current stood 8 hours to the WSW. No prospect of a change. The chance looks small. The Barometer a little higher than for some days past is the only indication of a change. Bad old sea from South. Vessell [VESSEL] goes slow against it.

Septmber 7th All this day bafling [BAFFLING] winds from SSE to SSW. Squally. Showery. Cloudy. fogy [FOGGY]. Nasty weather. Current 36 miles ENE. No prospect of a change. Lost 6 miles in Latt [LATTITUDE]. the D___l [DEVIL] has full power over the Winds in these Lattitudes.

1859

September 8th Latter part fine breezes & pleasant. Wind South. Current 19 ESE.

September 9th First & middle pleasant. Fine wind South. Latter part wind SSW fresh. Stood 10 hours to West 8 hours to N.E. No prospect of a change.

September 10th All this 24 hours fresh breezes from SSW½W & passing clouds. I cannot get to the South without a different wind. If I stand to the West I shall make Northern. I can make little southern without Easting. Mine is a hard case. This is the eleventh day that the wind has been dead in my teath [TEETH?] with a heavy head sea. I have been trying for the new route & I cannot get on it without making Northern. I do not like to do so if I can help it.

September 11th First part wind SSW & W. Strong breeze passing clouds. Middle & latter part South strong breezes passing clouds. I think I have the trades at last. I want to se [SEE] the glass rise to assure me of the fact. Hope to find the wind cont [CONTINUE?] to the Eastward the next 24 hours. A hard chance mine truly.

September 12th First part wind S. Middle SE. SSE fine breezes. Latter part wind SE. SSE. Light squalls & bafling [BAFFLING]. At 10 hours 30' [10:30] crossed the Line. Long [LONGITUDE] 26°18'. 39 days out. A hard chance I have had in looking back. I do not see where I could have bettered it. I have made Western whenever I could without makeing [MAKING] Northern. If the wind holds here a few days I shall have made a goot [GOOD] tack by crossing as far East as I did.

September 13th. Wind SSE through light & passing clouds. Experienced no westering current. Barometer stands higher than for fifteen days past. I have no doubt got the trades but light & far to the South. I consider myself in a good possion [POSITION] better than if I had crossed in 29° or 30°.

September 14th All this day light bafling [BAFFLING] winds from SSE. Passing clouds. The worst chance I ever saw to get South. Am now well to the windward of Noronha [FERNANDO NORONHA, BRAZIL?].

September 15th All this day wind from the SSE bafling [BAFFLING] a point or two in squalls. Passing clouds & squally. Experienced no Western current. Latter part fresh breezes SSE & light squalls. Expect strong trades for a few days.

September 16th 1859. First & middle wind South fresh & squally. Middle SSE. S by E. fresh & squally. The last two days I think the current has been to the S & E ¾ knots pr [PER] hour. It has been squally & bafling [BAFFLING] so I cannot be sure as to the rate. I find myself farther to the S & E than I expected.

September 17 First part fresh breezes from S by E SSE & squally.
