1837 21st 1 mo This morning a small wind at SE and overcast, with every appearance of rain or snow storm; by 10 o'clock it began to storm with sleet. In the afternoon wind increasing at East with a moderate rain. Although it is a very cold chilly storm, it will weaken the ice & probably give an opportunity for the Mail Packet to leave, which would be a desirable circumstance, as we have been imprisoned by the Ice until there is Mails due.

The stocks that is out on the Commons especially the sheep will no doubt suffer very much with the cold & the want of food.

22nd Last evening and the greater par of the night the rain fell in torrents. It was the greatest flood of rain that we have had since winter commenced. The latter part of the night, the wind changed from eastward to SW, and blew a violent gale, with squalls of snow. The snow was considerable gone this morning, but many drifts still remained. The latter part of the day & evening wind at NW and a smothering snow storm.

So far as winter has passed away I think we be in truth call it the most severe that has occured for many years. Several horses & Sleighs have crossed the harbor & brought sundry goods from the Schooner [EXACT?] lying in the ice.
