1837 13th 3 mo The alarm of fire has not been heard during the past winter, which may be to the many favors dayly [DAILY] received. To day about 10 o'clock the cry of fire arroused the attention of the people, which proved to be a dwelling house in the out skirts of Egypt, near Joppa, owned & occupied by Nathan Ames a carpenter. The fire was in the garret or backloft, and was soon extinguished without much damage, except to the furniture.

13th The annual Town meeting commenced to day at 9 o'clock, James Bunker was chosen Town Clerk, the meeting then adjourned on account of the fire to 2 o'clock PM. At the adjournment, the finance committee reported that the town was in debt on interest 44,000$ & recommended to hire 6000 to supply the wants of the town until among could be collected by taxation, which was adopted. The town then voted to raise by taxation 25500$ and chose Frederick F. Swain Collector at 4 [???] he guaranteeing the payment of the whole amount [??? suceeding year.

9th 4 mo The weather has been cold & windy, ever since spring came in. All vegetation is uncommonly backward. Yesterday much rain fell. Wind SSE at 11 o'clock in the evening a Brig to ashore at the head of the Hummock Pond, loaded with coffee & c from Sandomingo bound to Boston. To dya strong wind at West, the Brig is bilged & getting to pieces (Capt. name is 9[SANLE?]) the barg name Ceylon). The greatest part of the Cargo will be saved but much damaged, particularly the coffee. The barge is casting down, to be chipped to Boston. Much of the damaged coffee has been sold by Auction which brought from 3 1/2 for 100 to 1.75.
