May 8th. Society convened. After the usual exercises Smith
Bartlett & Eldridge declaimed; Swift read a composition
French a criticism. Perkins and McLane delivered original
declamations, and a dispute was read by Crocker and
Holmes on the question whether the poet or orator was most worthy of admiration.
The parts for the next meeting were then assigned
and the Society adjourned.

Crocker and Bridgman declaimed, French and Cleveland
read compositions & Cummings and Carter criticisms
Evans delivered an original declamation; and the question
whether the study of mathematics or that of the learned
languages was most important as a means of mental
discipline was discussed by Eldridge and Smith on the affirmative and
Swift and Simpson on the negative. The decision was
made in favor of the affirmative. Voted that Baker be
readmitted into this Society; Voted that the constitution be revised
and a committee be chosen as this committee. It was
