PREFACE

CHARLOTTE PEABODY DODGE, a 1902 Punahou graduate who taught history, mathematics, and social studies at Punahou between 1906 and 1946, wrote this account describing the school during World War II. It was written as an update to Punahou, 1841-1941, which she co-authored with Mary Charlotte Alexander, an 1892 graduate. Although
the work was completed in 1947 and later typeset, it was never
published.

Miss Dodge's manuscript and the typeset copy were found in the
Punahou Archives and brought to the school's attention by former
archivist Jacqueline Jacobs Rath '37. Although an examination of the
typeset copy revealed the need for further editing, especially in the
area of capitalization, the decision was made to preserve the original
typesetting and keep changes to a minimum. The following changes
were introduced: grammatical editing where it was deemed necessary
and there it was permitted within the original typesetting; the addi-
tion of the war year dates to the title; the introduction of brackets
around what appears to be an interpolated passage on page thirteen;
a correction of dates and chronological order in the last paragraph on
page thirty-two; and a change of typeface for the dedication, chapter
headings, and italicized words.

The Class of 1944, on the occasion of its 40th reunion, is under-
writing the cost of publishing this pamphlet as a gift to Punahou.
Elspeth Cantlay Kerr '44, a member of the reunion class, read the
typeset copy and offered suggestions. Barbara Pope '69 designed and
illustrated the cover and title page and helped guide the pamphlet
through production.
