My dear old Nan

Many thanks for your last letter. I send Mother a cheque for £6 for a new dress. You will be sure to see that it is really spent on that & not put into that bottomless sink, the Sustentation Fund. I also send Father the book he wanted as a birthday present, with my best

wishes for good health & a clearer utterance. I am glad to hear that he is getting on well.

I have had a most harassed week but it is nearly over now. I have two consultations today & I must get the 'Spectator' out, & then I am free. "Cras ingens iterabimus aequor." I will leave orders that the 'Spectator' be sent to you direct while I am away.

On Tuesday I dined with old William Blackwood, who is getting rather frail. On Wednesday I dined with the Ecksteins – a fine millionaire's dinner – fresh strawberries, plovers' eggs, hooky noses & diamonds. Last night I dined with the Malcolms, and evaded with difficulty Angela's curiosity as to the nature of my S. Africa case.

My indigestion is better, thank you, but I am very tired. However that will be over by the time Ushant shuts the door on me.

I will write from Madeira, & of course from Cape Town. Write to me up to April 28th to the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town, & after that to 3 Temple Gardens, & Mole will forward. If I am not knifed in a Hottentot kraal or drowned by a water-horse I will be back not later than June 10th.

I do hope you will all keep well & cheerful while I am away. I will send Mother a line tomorrow.

With much love to all

Your affectionate brother

Jock
