I warpled to get your letter yesterday for I really thought my cruel relatives had entirely forsaken me. I sent off Father's book yesterday: I hope he will like them, and I wish him many happy returns of his birthday. I am afraid I have little news to give you. I am very thrang with law and other things, & Mansfield progresses [his projected book on Lord Mansfield]. I dined on Monday night with Alastair Fraser, Lovat's brother & one of the funniest men living. He is a gold-prospector now & has just returned from Abyssinia. I have not heard from my uncle and aunt yet. I had a screed today from Andrew Lang about things

in general. To day is Hugh Warrand's wedding-day; he is marrying a Miss Tooth, an Australian heiress, weel-tochered but unco ill-faured. It seems the only way left for Scots gentlemen to make money.
The beautiful weather still continues, & makes me long to be out of town. It is pleasant having both my own & Rowlatt's chambers on the garden. I have had to purchase Campbell's "Lives of

the Lord Chancellors" - a dreidfu' expense.
I must go over to Clapham soon & inquire for them. Willie, I suppose, will leave you to-day. I am glad to see that B.N.C [Brasenose College] has got 3 firsts in Mods.
