THE ATHENAEUM, PALL MALL, S.W.

Sat [1913?]

Mr Buchan

I have just received a copy of your life of Ld Ardwall - whether from you or Johnny I cannot tell. Whichever it is I am grateful to you after having read the last two chapters. It recalls to me very rare & happy memories in a way which only a real artist could do & who I am ashamed to say I did not before think

you cd do.

In my Oxford days I had exactly the same prejudice against you that I have always had against Jowett; not only were you invariably successful but I thought you were an apostle of success. And I never had an inkling of the very delightful qualities wh have produced this most charming book. I am always "agin the Govt" & I most unfairly associated you with the powers that be.

I wrote you a long time ago a letter (that has never been returned) but was betrayed by Whos Who into sending it to 13 Bryanston St so I conclude it may still be mouldering there. It was an appreciation of your recent remarks on Representative Govt.

It was perhaps as well you kept Johnnie J out of talking to Ure with whom I thought JJ dined once a week. Anyhow Winston Churchill has intervened (not legally!) & I hope for the best.

Yours sincerely ESP Haynes

You were quite right to put me off off that book on solicitors - I shall never write it unless I retire
