I have just received a copy of your life of Ld Ardwall - whether from you or Johnny I cannot tell. Whichever it is I am grateful to you after having read the last two chapters. It recalls to me very rare & happy memories in a way which only a real artist could do & who I am ashamed to say I did not before think

In my Oxford days I had exactly the same prejudice against you that I have always had against Jowett; not only were you invariably successful but I thought you were an apostle of success. And I never had an inkling of the very delightful qualities wh have produced this most charming book. I am always "agin the Govt" & I most unfairly associated you with the powers that be.

I wrote you a long time ago a letter (that has never been returned) but was betrayed by Whos Who into sending it to 13 Bryanston St so I conclude it may still be mouldering there. It was an appreciation of your recent remarks on Representative Govt.
It was perhaps as well you kept Johnnie J out of talking to Ure with whom I thought JJ dined once a week. Anyhow Winston Churchill has intervened (not legally!) & I hope for the best.
