My dearest wee Mother
Alastair departed for Oxford last night at 4.55 after taking Alice to the Zoo. His first results come out next Wednesday night. I do hope the dear laddie gets something.
Susie's cold is definitely better owing to this treatment. She is in bed just now for 4 days, but she coughs much less. I am dining to night with my old master at the Bar, Hamilton, whose family came from Caverhill [in Peeblesshire]. He is now Lord Sumner. I got Walter's letter this morning. I hope you are all well.

Remember we are waiting to have you whenever you care to come. Did I tell you that I got a letter on Saturday from Rosebery, forwarded from Leithen Lodge, in which he said he saw I was harassing Peeblesshire & asked me to do the harassing from his house. It was very kind of him surely. Wick Burghs result will be out tonight. My forecast is that the Liberals hold it by about 100.
I have to speak with Lord Salisbury at the annual meeting of the Personal Service Association on Monday. But after that I have no speeches till later on in January. I am quite well.
Much love to all
Your affectionate son John
