My dear little one
I am writing this late at night (Monday), as I am off at break of day tomorrow to the Albert district [words crossed out in blue crayon by censor] to see the 3rd Army. This has been a gorgeous autumn day. I went to Sir John French's house in the morning, where I saw Jim Salisbury & Lord Grenfell & others. I took Lord G. out in my car to the 9th Lancers, where we found Arthur on great form. He looks vulgarly well & very happy. Beale-Browne & Reynolds struck me as two of the finest soldiers I have ever met. I have written a line to Hilda. Then we went on & saw Cis [Cecil] Bingham, who has now the 1st Cavalry Division. He lives in a beautiful old chateau which Marlborough once besieged. This evening I have been to dine at the headquarters of the 11th Corps, which

includes the Guards Division.
The boats were not running today, so I have got no letter & probably you won't get mine on Wednesday. This big move is playing a dance with the posts. When I am back I may be hung up by this for a day, so expect me when you see me. I have not yet seen Henry Wilson, but I don't think I shall stay much longer here. One is completely outside the main movement, & would really hear more about it in London.
I do hope you are well & cheerful & the blessings. I am as fit as a fiddle. I am ashamed not to have written to Mother, but I have been rather rushed & my letter to you must do for the household.
Much love, my dearest
Your every devoted
John
