My own little darling
I had 2 letters from you yesterday but none today. Your letter days seem to come in pairs. The post in the advanced village is nothing like as quick or as regular as it used to be at St Omer. The towels have arrived safely. Very many thanks for them. Will you remember to send me an electric torch, for the ways are dark & foul.
Yesterday it rained all day like a deluge & is as bad to-day. It is an awful pity for the operation. Winter has begun far too soon. In this weather I find my field boots a great comfort, as they are absolutely warm and

waterproof. I worked all day yesterday in my office, & wrote a letter to Sandy. Gen.l Charteris is a most awful good fellow. He reminds me a good deal of Johnnie Jameson in his Scotchness & humour. He is uncommon good at his job. My life is now immersed in decimals & letters of the alphabet.
I am pretty well all right to-day & the turn is wearing off. It has been a great bore & had a poor effect on my spirits. I am always thinking about you & the children. I hope the wee boys have arrived safely. Above all I hope you are not worrying & not feeling very deserted. It is the fortune of war & the damned thing can't last for ever.
I shall be able to let you know when I can run home for a few days very soon
Much love to all
Your ever devoted
John
