My own little darling
I got two letters from you this morning. I am so glad you have got my letter at last. I am as fit as a Stradivarius fiddle. I will be very glad to get the electric torch to light my wandering footsteps. I am very much amused to hear all Mr John's sayings. Tell him I see Fish & Knacky continually. I wish he would get Fish to bring him over the next time. Has he lost the Magic Walking-stick?
I really hadn't the face to go down to the Base or home when there is so much to do. I feel completely well, & the glorious sharp weather which has now begun makes life really worth living. Yesterday afternoon I had a long tramp on the Picardy downs & came back in view of a gorgeous sunset, with the guns beating a great tattoo angelus.
AJB. [Balfour] arrived last night. We are fairly congested with celebrities just now. If he stays on to-morrow I am going to take him out

for the day.
I got the bootlaces safely. I have still plenty of Allenbury & Benger in case I want it again.
Did you ever see anything like the way Hodder is advertising Greenmantle! "J.B's Glorious Novel" I do hope the old thing goes well. I have been writing a lot of good Scots verses out here, & think of collecting my poems into a small book.
Comfort poor wee mother, who is very disturbed by Alastair's going. He is to be a captain in the 15th R. Scots. I must hunt him up as soon as possible.
How is my learned little Wozer? I do hope, my little one, you are well & keeping as cheery as possible.
Much love to all you darlings
Your ever devoted
John
