My dearest old mother

I was so sorry to hear that Cameron Corbett had failed. Susie & I discussed the matter last night. I have written to John Maxwell, as he is the likeliest, living close at hand. If he fails I will try Lord Ardwall. If it had not been the Autumn session we might easily have got a politician like Haldane or the Lord Advocate. The best draws I suppose would be people like Graham or Tullibardine or Nick Campbell, but it would be difficult to bring them from the other end of Scotland, and we could not offer to put them up. Don't worry, old mother mine: we will find somebody.

I do hope Anna will pick up at Peebles. Jack alas! won't take her book, but I will wait a few days before telling her. I think of trying Duckworth in London. I hope to hear that you are coming here to-morrow. Susie is very well, & so is A.C.H. A.C.H. was photographed yesterday. I am rather a wreck - I think it is liver & the weather. Yesterday we went to tea with Dr Whyte's eldest son, a nice fellow. This afternoon we are going out to Dalkett to Lady Anna Kerr.

Hoping to see you to-morrow

Much love to all

Your affectionate son

John
