My dearest wee Mother

I spent a melancholy evening going over the MS of Father's lectures - or rather studies, for they are more in the nature of essays. I think they are very good. I remember he wanted me to revise the Introduction, which I think would be the better of it. The studies themselves are excellent, and it was very much Father's own subject. I am sending you the MS. to read. It only makes about 35,000 words, so it would not be a bulky book, even with the addition of the poems & a few special sermons. you had got the first rush of letters over from nearer friends.

Will you be so kind as to send me my strop which I left hanging behind the curtain [in] the spare bedroom? I am cutting myself shaving every morning through its absence. Also please tell Nan that the block we had at Harehope came from the Army and Navy Stores. Their number is 65166 if she wants to order one but she had better let me do it if she will tell me exactly what she wants. Susie says, however, that the Stores are very slow & congested at this season, & I think it would be better to get it from an Edinburgh stationers, like Macniven & Wallace.

I am wondering very much how you & the rest are bearing up. I do hope your health is still keeping better

Much love, my dear wee body

Your affectionate son

John
