My dearest wee Mother
I was very glad to get Nan's letter yesterday & it was kind of you to copy out Willie's letter for me. I think it a most wonderful letter. Poor man, it would be a comfort to him to write it, when he was so far from his friends. I wonder what he is thinking about the King's gifts to India. They seem to me to be rather fine & imaginitive, but I have no means of judging. I shall be interested to know what Willie thinks.
I enclose a letter from J. [Tindal?] Did you ever hear of a man with a queerer epistolary style. Tell Nan that the little scent sachet came from Floris, Jermyn Street, S.W.

You might tell Walter that among the books sent him yesterday Hume Brown's history is not a new book. It is the illustrated edition de luxe of a book first published in 3 small volumes. He ought to make his review a general article on Scottish history, referring to the different books.
This is a lovely bright day. Susie is going on very well. She is allowed to have people to see her now. She had the Lyttletons yesterday, & Alice Ashby St Ledgers [ST: afterwards Lady Wimborne] & Mrs Sellar are coming today. I hope Nan will get a few days in Glasgow. I am afraid you must be pretty uncomfortable, wee body, but I am glad you can eat & are sleeping better.
Much love to all
Your affectionate son
John
