His wife Sophia was the widow of George Grosvenor, Susan Buchan's uncle.
Sophia was the widow of Thomas George Grosvenor, known as Tommy. He was a diplomatist who served as Secretary of Legation in Peking and Secretary of Embassy in St Petersburg, dying there in 1886.
