Mrs Maude was the mother of a young officer, Gervase Maude, who was brought in the same casualty clearing station, mortally wounded, as Alastair.
'My History' was 'Nelson's History of the War', eventually running to 24 volumes, which JB wrote throughout the war. They described actions of about six months before. The volumes ran in the end to more than one million words.
