My dearest wee Mother
Many thanks for your letter this morning. I will have Hodder Williams asked about the wee book. It may have gone astray in the post. I am glad Mrs Walker has got off to India, for I was not very hopeful about her case. Skiel has gone to Murmansk in N. Russia, which is a safer bit than France, but [seems] cold.
I had a busy day at the office yesterday. Hugh Walpole is back after six weeks rest, but his eyes are still dicky. I have got Henry Newbolt to work with me now.
I have been offered a very high post abroad - as important as

that of a first-class ambassador. Normally I should have taken it, but I daren't with my health, for it would involve endless travelling & public speaking, and I am not ready for that yet. So I have declined, & mean to go on declining, though great pressure will be put on me to accept. This is confidential. The job was that of High Commissioner to the United States. I am greatly honoured, but it can't be done. Don't mention this to a soul.
Marnie goes away to day, & the nurse comes. Susie is wonderfully well, & there is good news from the children. I must try to get down to them for a day this week-end.
I do hope the headaches are better
Much love to all
[illegible]
John
