There is one sentence in
the book which amused
me very much & I wonder
if in place of Dr. MacMichael,
I may read Dr. McLaren
on p. 221. For a few
years, I spent every Sunday
morning reading to a dear
old lady & we never varied
it. The Church Service;
& then the sermon dear
Dr. McLaren had preached
the Sunday before & which
was published in the B.I.
I had a hearty laugh as
I read of "Mrs. Morran's
custom" I sincerely hope
she enjoyed it as much
as I did & derived
the same benefit. I
sometimes wish I could
have those days over
again; but my dear friend
like so many others has
passed away. Thanking
you very much for
the Book

I think 'custom' is right: the loop which makes the t look like a d occurs in 'sentence' in line 3 and on the l of 'lady' in line 11; the flourish on the m is matched at the end of other words - e.g. 'derived' in line 21.
The passage referred to is from ch. XI of 'Huntingtower', p.220. 'It was Mrs. Morran's custom of a Sunday to spend the morning in devout meditation. Some years before she had given up tramping the five miles to kirk, on the ground that having been a regular attendant for fifty years she had got all the good out of it that was probable. Instead she read slowly aloud to herself the sermon printed in a certain religious weekly which reached her every Saturday, and concluded with a chapter or two of the Bible.'
